"I come from a mere state...Nevertheless, we have an impact in the world. Our gross domestic product is about $2.5 trillion. We're a land of innovation... We're a land of disruption, where we never set in and accept a status quo, but we disrupt and create and build a future that works for everyone."
- Gov. Jerry Brown at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, Russia

LAUSD Board Member Scott Schmerelson joins members for VICA After Dark
|
Presenting Sponsor Vince Rossi (
Toll Brothers
), LAUSD Board Member Scott Schmerelson, VICA Board Member Francine Oschin (
Oschin Partners, Inc.
) VICA Chairman Kevin Tamaki (AT&T), and Presenting Sponsor Frank Su (Toll Brothers) at Wednesday's VICA After Dark.
On Wednesday, VICA members gathered inside one of the model homes built by
Toll Brothers
for a VICA After Dark event with LAUSD Board Member Scott Schmerelson. As a board member who has spent over 35 years working with students and parents at the school site, Schmerelson spoke about the needs of Los Angeles schools, highlighting the different ways businesses can partner with local schools.
"As business people, your participation in career days at your local school shows kids that there is more to life than just school," he said. "That's how you can get involved as businesses. Show up to career days at your local school. "
Schmerelson emphasized the need for career preparation and technical skills training, which are essential in a region where many businesses are seeking qualified candidates for "hands-on" jobs. He added, "Kids should be college and career ready. There are so many kids that are so good with their hands and who look forward to attending shop classes." He highlighted the West Valley Occupational Center as a leading example of the different kinds of opportunities for skills training that can benefit both the students and communities in LAUSD.
Schmerelson concluded by reassuring VICA members that, "as a principal and an educator, I know it's about moving the school district forward. I'm here to work for the kids!"
Thank you to Toll Brothers who hosted and sponsored this event.

Oppose Increasing Higher Education Costs
|
VICA opposes Senate Bill 574 (Lara), which would restrict the University of California's (UC) ability to contract cost effective and competitive bids, and would ultimately increase annual administrative and operating costs by more than $88 million. This bill would require that bidders certify that their employees are compensated at a level that does not undercut by more than 5% the average compensation for UC employees performing similar work.
SB 574 is an unnecessary and restrictive evaluation mechanism for UC contracts, and ultimately will reduce competition and raise costs. Under the Fair Wage/Fair Work Plan, the UC already monitors wage and working conditions as well as compliance with federal, state, and UC workplace laws and policies for contracted employees. SB 574 would undermine the UC's ability to achieve cost savings that could be directed to the UC's mission of teaching, research, and public service.

Oppose Hiring Delays and Ban on Conviction History Request
|
VICA opposes Assembly Bill 1008 (McCarty), which would ban employers from asking any questions related to an applicant's criminal history before a conditional offer of employment has been made. If the employer does not wish to hire that candidate due to their conviction history, they would have to go through an extensive assessment and appeals process including a waiting period before offering the job to another candidate.
AB 1008
goes far beyond the original intent
of so-called 'ban the box' laws, which aims to facilitate a conversation between employers and applicants with criminal histories.

VICA Seeking Administrative Assistant
|
Immediate opportunity for an Administrative Assistant for a small, but busy office in Van Nuys. The Administrative Assistant is the face of VICA for most visitors and many VICA members. While duties range from managing the front desk activities to compiling event registration, the first priority of the Assistant is always the person who calls in or walks through the door.
This is a great opportunity for an ambitious graduate to learn about advocacy and the business community in the San Fernando Valley.
If you or someone you know is a qualified candidate, click below to learn more about the requirements for the position and information on how to apply.
