Happy Holidays from VICA!

As we wrap up 2024, we want to wish all of our members a joyful holiday season and a happy new year! This is our final VICA newsletter of the year, and we’re excited for a new year filled with continued advocacy and collaboration to improve the San Fernando Valley.

This week, the VICA team and members gathered to celebrate the season with a festive potluck and our much-anticipated annual White Elephant gift exchange! It was a heartwarming way to reflect on the successes of the year and look ahead to 2025.

Thank you for being part of the VICA community – we look forward to achieving even more together in 2025!

Please note, the VICA office will be closed on December 24, 25, and January 1.

VICA Hosts Coffee and Tea with DWP

VICA hosted its Coffee and Tea with DWP event Tuesday, December 17, at The Garland, featuring a fireside chat with LADWP CEO Janisse Quiñones, moderated by James Woolum, a partner at ZGF Architects.

Quiñones shared her ambitious vision for LADWP, highlighting the utility's commitment to achieving 100% clean energy by 2035 and sourcing 70% of its water locally. She emphasized the importance of equity in meeting these goals, noting that more than half of Los Angeles communities are classified as disadvantaged. Key initiatives include LADWP's largest solar battery project to date, increasing the city's renewable energy share to 65%, and the recent approval of a recycled water facility that will serve 250,000 customers daily.

Quiñones discussed the utility's preparations for the 2028 Olympics, focusing on infrastructure resilience, redundant power systems, and electrification of transportation fleets. She also addressed efforts to increase community engagement, improve energy efficiency, and ensure affordability for ratepayers while balancing the need for long-term investments.

Recognizing the challenges ahead, Quiñones underscored the importance of collaboration among businesses, community organizations, and government entities to drive progress and ensure shared prosperity.

VICA would like to thank presenting sponsors SoCalGas and ZGF Architects, co-sponsor ICON CDC, table sponsors Parsons and Radford Studio Center, and leadership sponsors Adobe, Boys and Girls Club of San Fernando Valley, Cerrell, and JE Strategies, for their support of this event.

LA County Aims to Keep People and Pets Together in Rent-Stabilized Housing

Responding to rising rates of people surrendering their pets to shelters, often due to housing restrictions, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors is calling for development of an ordinance aimed at helping people keep animals in rent-stabilized units.

Supervisors Hilda Solis and Lindsey Horvath argued Wednesday in a motion that pets provide significant mental health benefits, but restrictions imposed on animal ownership at housing units are a leading cause of people being forced to giving up their pets. Read more.

Before his Around-the-World Flight, Santa is Taking a Snow Day in Big Bear

We all understand the concept of "pre-steam," and the need to let a little bit of it off before undertaking a sizable venture.

True, we're typically letting off steam after something big concludes, and we're sure this practice applies to the Claus household, where the Mr. and Mrs. likely take a spa day, or at least a few solid naps, following Christmas.

But letting steam disperse ahead of time is important, too, and Santa will do just that in Big Bear on Dec. 21 and 22. Read more.
