Resolution, repeatability, and accuracy in micro motion systems
In this 3-minute video we review the basic definitions of resolution, accuracy, and repeatability.

These parameters fundamentally impact the complexity, cost, and development time of a motion system. Understanding them can help you meet your requirements for performance, without adding unnecessary cost and time to market.

First, we discuss position resolution, often called precision, and the difference between open-loop and closed-loop resolution.

Second, we mention accuracy. In practice, this is the least important of the three terms. This is because calibration can improve accuracy up to the limits of the system’s resolution and repeatability.

Finally, we demonstrate the difference between uni-directional and bi-directional repeatability and explain why it matters.

New Scale Celebrates 20th Anniversary
New Scale Technologies’ Susan Henderson demonstrates a micro motion module at the company’s 20th anniversary open house. Watch the 30-second video for additional highlights.
New Scale Technologies celebrated its 20th anniversary in October 2022 with an open house at its design and manufacturing center in Victor, NY.

Founded in Victor by David Henderson, the company has earned 22 US patents for micro-motion technology. These include the SQUIGGLE® and UTAF piezoelectric ultrasonic motors and M3 “smart” motion modules. The smart modules integrate the company’s patented micro motors with position sensors, precision guides and bearings, and all motor drive and control circuits.

With ultra-compact form factors, the modules are found in vision systems exploring the ocean’s deepest trenches, telescopes mapping the furthest stars, hand-held diagnostic instruments supporting remote medical teams, micro manipulators helping neuroscientists explore the workings of the brain, and much more.

The company formed its New Scale Robotics division in 2018, using its M3 technology to design and manufacture a robotic gripper/caliper tool. Today its robotic workstations help small-batch, high-mix manufacturers automate dimensional metrology to improve quality, productivity and competitiveness. With collaborative robots and New Scale’s teachable “plug-and-produce” software for metrology, the workstations use the robotic gripper/caliper and a wide variety of commercial gauges to automate quality control tasks.
