VIRGINIA ASSOCIATION OF PLANNING DISTRICT COMMISSIONS HONOR SENATOR MARK WARNER

The Virginia Association of Planning District Commissions (VAPDC) has awarded Virginia Senator Mark Warner its sixth annual Legislator of the Year Award. The award was created to honor legislators who serve as ambassadors for the advancement of regional planning and multijurisdictional cooperation for economic and community development in Virginia.
"PDC's across the Commonwealth benefit from Senator Warner's outstanding leadership and contributions to the promotion of regional planning," said VAPDC President Robert K. Coiner. "We appreciate the Senator's efforts on behalf of Virginia's regions."
Senator Warner has provided outstanding leadership and contributions to projects and programs throughout the state. He was instrumental in bringing over $1 million in homeland security funds to the Hampton Roads region. He worked to ensure broadband reaches our most rural and remote communities including those on the Eastern Shore and in the Allegany-Highlands regions. Senator Warner continuously supports economic development and tourism programs like the Crooked Road in Southwest Virginia and the Tobacco Heritage Trial in Southside Virginia. In the Central Shenandoah region, he has been supportive of the Fields of Gold agritourism program which provides business support to small farmers and agritourism operators to help them grow their business. In Monterey, Virginia, Senator Warner was instrumental in helping fund the renovation of their old school building turning it into a vibrant business incubator center. 
VAPDC's leadership created the Legislator of the Year Award to recognize public officials who not only support regional collaboration, but who are actively engaged in public policy efforts that advance economic prosperity in the Commonwealth. The 2018 award was presented to Senator Warner last month in the Shenandoah Valley.
Planning District Commissions were established by the General Assembly in 1969. There are 21 PDCs and Regional Commissions in Virginia made up of elected officials and citizens appointed by local governments. The purpose of the Planning District Commissions is to encourage and facilitate regional solutions to problems of area-wide significance. This is done by promoting the efficient development of the physical, social, and economic policies of all districts by assisting local governments to plan for the future. The PDCs of Virginia have joined together to create the Virginia Association of Planning District Commissions to share best practices, and further regionalism across the commonwealth.
