Last month, VJH’s own Support Services Manager, Misty Flemming, was highlighted in Interior Health’s Environmental Sustainability Newsletter for her work at our site. I would like to paraphrase her words here.
VJH is the first Interior Health site to trial the replacement of disposable biomedical waste containers with reusable ones. The grey, Daniels M64 reusable containers are available on multiple floors. Biomedical waste continues to be disposed of safely, but the containers are cleaned appropriately to be put back into circulation. In doing so, our site reduces: costs associated to disposal, CO2 emissions, blood and bodily fluid spills, and potential musculoskeletal injuries.
Among IH sites, VJH also stands out as the only site to incorporate education of proper collection and disposal of biomedical waste during clinical orientations. This ensures safe disposal, correct segregation, reduced contamination and ultimately, most appropriate disposal of waste. This has been key to our success and has been noted by the vendor as an example for sites to follow.
