VLP Lends a CELHP'ing Hand
VLP is proud to announce the launch of the
COVID-19 Eviction Legal Help Project (or CELHP for short)!

The project's primary goals are to help low-income tenants and owner-occupants of small properties achieve short- and long-term housing stability throughout the state.

CELHP, exclusively through the Volunteer Lawyers Project, will help low-income owner-occupants of two-to-three-unit properties who face financial hardship brought on by the pandemic. In addition to VLP, six other legal services organizations across Massachusetts have joined CELHP. Together with VLP, these organizations will assist low-income tenants who, as a result of the economic effects of COVID-19, were not able to pay rent and now face eviction.

To help develop and implement CELHP locally and at the state level, VLP has brought on several new hires to make up the CELHP team and is currently working to boost CELHP's web & social media presence.

If you are interested in learning more about, or volunteering with, CELHP please email CELHP Project Manager Breanna Sheehan.

Volunteer Case Win

A lien was put on our client's home, and a foreclosure sale seemed imminent. But, after receiving pro bono assistance from a VLP volunteer, our client is no longer in danger of losing his home. How was that possible? Because of one volunteer's hard work, attention to detail, and determination!

Our elderly client had received legal aid before. Unfortunately, the closing attorney on his mortgage failed to make him aware of the available homestead protections, and a lien was placed on his home for $23,000. There was no way he could have paid this off since social security is his sole income source. The opposing party tried to force our client to sell his home to pay off the debt, but luckily, Attorney Slattery agreed to take on this case.

Attorney Slattery noticed the issue regarding homestead protection not being applied and negotiated a settlement of the underlying judgment. At no expense to our client, the closing attorney would settle the debt using his malpractice insurance. Attorney Slattery additionally applied for, and obtained, the available homestead protection at the client's residence to further protect the home from future creditors.

After two years of having his quality of life in limbo, our client is finally able to rest easy. A mistake he had nothing to do with could have cost this man his home, but luckily he had a VLP volunteer ready to offer assistance!

Just remember, even on days when you may feel hopeless, you are the reason so many low-income folks out there have had their hope justified. Thank you so much for your continued efforts to ensure our neighbors receive the help and dignity they deserve!

If you are interested in volunteering in any capacity, please reach out to Communications Coordinator Eddie Barlow.
