Black History Month Spotlight

American-mathematician-Gladys-West image

Gladys West

One of the few women who contributed to computing for the U.S. military during the early Cold War, helping to lay the foundations for the Global Positioning System (GPS). Hired by the Navy in 1956 as a mathematician at the Naval Proving Ground in Dahlgren, Virginia, she worked on computer programming and coding. In the early 1960s, West was part of a study that confirmed Pluto's regular motion relative to Neptune. From the mid-1970s to the 1980s, she used complex algorithms to account for variations in gravitational and tidal forces affecting Earth's shape. Her work with the IBM 7030 computer, known as Stretch, enabled the development of an accurate model of Earth's shape for GPS satellite orbits.

Bayard Rustin

A key organizer of the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom and one of Martin Luther King Jr.'s closest advisors, particularly on strategies for nonviolent resistance. Rustin was highly involved in the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) and played a significant role in establishing the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). Early in his career, he was arrested for a "moral cause," which ultimately led to his public outing. From 1965 to 1979, Rustin served as the head of the A. Philip Randolph Institute, the AFL-CIO's African American constituency group. Working alongside A. Philip Randolph until Randolph's passing in 1979, Rustin focused on integrating unions and promoting union membership among African Americans.
