VMT Regulations Are Costing County Much Needed Housing

Not long ago I said something that made the rounds in the local media.



“The county is dead to us,” I said.


I made that point because the county’s anti-housing regulations have shut down virtually all home building in the unincorporated areas of San Diego County – where land actually exists to build – making it even more difficult for families to buy a home. As our housing crisis deepens, so do the impacts. It affects our ability to connect with each other, forces a growing number of people to commute long distances, creates even more greenhouse gas emissions, and pushes some companies to other parts of the state or country, taking good-paying jobs with them.

San Diego leaders urge President Trump to reverse course on massive tariffs | CBS8


The Building Industry Association of San Diego estimates that these tariffs will add an average of $10,000 to the cost of a home. 

 

"That $10,000 adds no value to the home, no value to the person who buys that home or apartment, and would add $70 a month to their mortgage payment. That's $70 a month for 30 years," Lori Pfeiler, who heads the association, said.

Another round of tariffs that are expected to be announced April 2, represent tax increases of $5-6 trillion over the next decade (if made permanent). Markets have focused on the anti-growth and inflationary risks from tariffs, and such taxes are placing clear risks on the economy.
