2020 continues to be a challenging year for everyone at the VMTH and in our communities. On top of the roadblocks we have overcome surrounding the pandemic, we are now being faced with additional adversity in wildfires that are threatening our communities. The recent LNU Lightning Complex Fire affected many of our team personally, with several faculty, staff, and students having to evacuate their homes. We are thankful that no one was hurt. Kudos to our clinical teams for treating 35 animals in the VMTH and assisting VERT in evaluating, triaging, and/or treating more than 1,000 animals at evacuation centers and sheltering in place at ranches in the fire zone. This field-first approach allowed the school to prioritize its response and treat as many animals as possible without further stressing VMTH resources. Along with others from hospital leadership, I had the pleasure of taking Dean Lairmore on a tour of the burned animals being treated in the hospital. He was impressed with your compassionate care of not only the animals, but of the clients, many of whom lost everything. He extended his compliments and gratitude to everyone for going above and beyond in the face of such tragedy. We anticipate additional fire response into the fall, as many fires are currently raging throughout the state. (We have been placed on standby for the North Complex Fire near Oroville at the time of this newsletter’s publication.) If any of you are feeling overwhelmed at this time, I encourage you to speak to your supervisor and also to utilize the services of Florence Soares-Dabalos, the hospital’s wellness counselor. She is not only an advocate for our clients, but for you as well. As always, stay strong. Eventually, we will get through this.

Key Cultural Pillar
"Value People"

The hospital recently acknowledged the hard work and special qualities of its staff members with the annual Staff Awards and Rachel Smith Award. The Staff Awards are divided into four categories: Large Animal Clinic, Small Animal Clinic, Client Services/Administrative, and Support Services (including laboratory, pathology, pharmacy, central services, and diagnostic imaging). The Rachel Smith Award is named for a lead staff member in the Clinical Pathology Laboratory for many years who worked with Dr. Oscar Schalm to develop the field of veterinary hematology. When Smith retired in 1985, an annual award was established in her name to honor her exemplary career. This award is intended to be the highest honor that the hospital can bestow upon a career staff employee. This year’s winners were:
|
Rachel Smith Award Winner – Sarah Blasczynski (Livestock Medicine Service)
Large Animal Staff Award Winner – Sarah Blasczynski (Livestock Medicine Service)
|
Small Animal Staff Award Winner – Judy Schettler (Dermatology Service)
|
Client Services/Administrative Staff Award Winner – Sharon Farnham (Large Animal Client Services)

Campuswide Deadlines Affecting Everyone
|
“Return to Campus” eLearning Course:
- By now, you should have received an email regarding the campuswide “Return to Campus” eLearning course. Everyone is required to take this short (approximately 12 minutes) online training. If you are an employee already back to work on campus, you must complete the training by September 25. If you are currently working remotely, regardless of a return to campus date, you must complete the training by December 15.
|
Flu Shots:
- The University of California has determined that all faculty, staff, and students must receive a flu shot this fall. The current COVID-19 pandemic makes vaccination for the upcoming 2020-21 flu season even more critical to help protect the health of our campus community. A reduction in the number of influenza cases preserves valuable health care resources to prevent and treat COVID-19. The deadline for vaccination or submitting a medical exemption is November 1.
