Exemplar and Top 50 Students Celebrated
|
|
Each year, Purdue University Fort Wayne chooses a class of Exemplar and Top 50 student recipients. They were honored for their accomplishments on Friday, April 29, during a dinner and awards ceremony in the Walb Union International Ballroom. The university recognizes these students for their enthusiasm and success in making the most of the full student experience. The College of Visual and Performing Arts is proud to have the following students recognized and celebrated for their hard work, dedication, and exceptional academic careers at PFW. The honorees are shown above from (left to right):
Olivia Bressler – Exemplar, Music
Victoria Burk – Music
Rachel Corwin – Music Education
Rebecca Craig – Music Therapy
Sarah Hobson – Theatre
Logan Lemon – Music Industry
These Top 50 students not only have high GPAs, they also excel in university activities, events, and organizations—and through community engagement both here in Fort Wayne and in their hometowns. Students must meet specific qualifications and apply to be considered in the selection process. The final recipients are chosen by a university committee. Exemplar recipients are chosen by college and school deans, department chairs, and/or faculty. See the complete list here.

Students Are Traveling Again
One of the activities that was greatly impacted during the recent pandemic was the ability to travel. Gathering our resources to provide experiences for students outside northeast Indiana has always been an essential building block to enhance their education. Whether traveling took them to Chicago, New York City, Austria, Italy, or Costa Rica, every student returned with a deeper understanding of how art and performance plays an essential role in our world. With recent COVID restrictions being relaxed, our students are once again venturing out into the world in the name of education.
Chicago – Symphonic Wind Ensemble
The Symphonic Wind Ensemble hit the road for Chicago between April 20-23 to perform with the DePaul University Wind Ensemble, and to work with composer Augusta Read Thomas. The tour encompassed a performance at Valparaiso High School, attending the Chicago Symphony for a performance of Mahler’s Symphony No. 6 with guest conductor Jaap van Zweden, a visit to the Art Institute of Chicago, and an architectural boat tour. The experience of touring is essential for our students who are performance and music education majors, as many of them will be involved in touring with the bands they’re teaching or during their own performance career. Plans to tour China, which were suspended during COVID, are being galvanized for Summer 2023.
Fertile Ground
During this year's convention, entitled Fertile Ground, ceramists convened from across the country to take part in lectures, workshops, and networking events. Click here to find out more about Fertile Ground.
Turkey Run and Shades
The PFW Photo Club is working on an exciting new project over the summer that includes travel to take photographs for Lake City Place in Warsaw, an assisted living facility, where many of the residents deal with dementia. The club will be traveling to Turkey Run State Park and Shades State Park from May 9 – 13, to take images. Chosen images will then be assigned to the doors of clients’ rooms to help them better navigate the facility and have a visual reference to arrive at their home destination. We will share more information as the project develops.
Art of Florence, Italy
One of our most anticipated study abroad programs is returning: The Art of Florence, Italy. Associate professors Chris Ganz and Steven Cody will travel with and co-teach 14 art and design students from May 28–June 12, 2022. Florence is home to some of the world’s most recognizable Renaissance art and architecture, including Michelangelo’s "David" statue, Botticelli’s works in the Uffizi Gallery and the Duomo Basilica. The course includes two weeks of classroom work prior to traveling, two weeks in Italy, and two weeks of classroom work upon returning to Fort Wayne. While based in Florence, students will take multiple excursions including day trips to Rome, Siena, Fiesole and Lucca.

New BFA in Musical Theatre Begins Fall 2022
|
|
In response to a wide regional interest in a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre, the Purdue Fort Wayne Department of Theatre will begin offering this exciting degree program beginning with the fall 2022 semester. The B.F.A. program will develop advanced performance skills for pre-professional actors, thereby improving their marketability and increasing their potential for acceptance into Master of Fine Arts programs.
Beverly Redman, chair of the Department of Theatre, and other faculty members have worked diligently over the last four years to make this highly desirable degree a reality.
“We are thrilled to offer a degree that will provide students the additional training they need to find the specific work they desire in the multibillion-dollar entertainment industry,” explained Redman. “Touring companies, theme parks, cruise ships, and regional theatres all hire actors, singers, and dancers who have earned a B.F.A. in musical theatre. Now, even more of our alumni will be among them.”
Additional classes in the program will be offered in advanced voice work, piano, advanced sight-singing and aural perception, along with advanced dance and musical theatre performance classes. Individual auditions are currently underway for acceptance into the 2022–23 inaugural class. Program information and the entire four-year plan can be found online here.
To schedule an audition, or for more information, contact Redman at [email protected].

Jackson Publishes New Book
|
Professor and Director of Music Therapy Nancy Jackson, PhD, MT-BC, has co-written the book Compositional Methods of Music Therapy with her colleague Annie Heiderscheit, PhD, MT-BC, LMFT. Heiderscheit is the director of music therapy and an associate professor at Augsburg University in Minneapolis, Minn.
Selecting and designing appropriate and effective music therapy experiences involves a critical thought process that considers multiple aspects of the client and their personal, interpersonal, and therapeutic contexts, as well as the nature of the four music therapy methods. The book focuses specifically on procedural guidelines for the compositional method-variations.
The book is intended for use by pre-internship music therapy students and by professionals who have never approached music therapy planning and implementation from the perspective of the four outlined methods.
