The Pillars of a Veritas Education
Veritas, along with all Great Hearts academies, has one unchanging core purpose: to cultivate the hearts and minds of students through the pursuit of Truth, Goodness and Beauty. What this means is made clear in a set of aphorisms called the Philosophical Pillars of Great Hearts. During the next few issues, we will highlight one pillar per week. Below is the first:

Presidents' Day, February 19: NO SCHOOL

 

AzMERIT Sample Testing Continues
  • During the month of February, all 6th-11th-grade lit/comp and Humane Letters classes, and all 6th-10th-grade math classes will complete AzMERIT sample tests and practice testing procedures, in preparation for this spring's standardized testing. This will take place during the regular class periods for these courses.
  • Families are encouraged to use the resources provided on the ADE's website linked here, and to bring any questions to their teachers as they work through this practice session.

Middle School Basketball Coach Need  
  • Due to a large turnout for boys basketball tryouts, we are excited that we will be adding a third middle school boys basketball team this season. With that in mind, we have an immediate opening for a middle school boys basketball coach. The season will run from now until the end of April/Early May.  Time commitment would be 2 practices per week and an 8-10 game schedule. New Joys of English Club!
  • Are you a logophile, a lover of words? Then join Joys of English, a group
    devoted to everything wonderful and joyful in our mother tongue! We'll write, read, play word games, and practice using language in clever and insightful ways (like the tasteful pun!). Meets after school Mondays and Thursdays in Rm 112.
2nd Annual Veritas Music Fest, March 24!

What: 5 Hours of live music, student vendors, food, friends, and fun!

LOOKING FOR TALENT! We are looking for MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL musically inclined students to participate. Are you in a band? Are you a solo student singer-songwriter?

8th-Grade Student Places in National Singing Competition
VPA 8th-grade student Will Altermann placed 2nd at NATS Vocal Competition (National Association Teachers of Singing) in both Classical and Musical Theatre at U of A on February 3rd, 2018.

VPA Freshman Published Illustrator
VPA freshman Sari Lewis is a published illustrator. She is the contributing illustrator in a children's book written by her grandfather which was published last week. The book is available in full color from MoreBooks! at More Mini Adventures in Jerusalem, by Sheldon Lewis and in black & white from Amazon.

Summer Opportunities
Science Program 

 
TGen's Bioscience Leadership Academy is a two-week bioscience program serving 20 Arizona high school students every summer. The intensive education and leadership program focuses on elevating students' understanding of the biosciences and precision medicine.

Starguard Lifeguard Training Courses

Did you know youth only need to be 15 years old to be a LIFEGUARD? 
Starguard Lifeguard Training class certifies teens in lifeguard rescues, basic first aid and CPR. Certification classes are scheduled in January, February, March; and the last one is in April. Once certified, teens can apply for a lifeguard position with Scottsdale or other places that hire lifeguards. Lifeguards receive extensive training in lifeguarding, customer service, responsibility and other job skills to prepare them for a future career. If you have a teen or know a teen who would be interested, please ask them to visit www.scottsdaleaz.gov and search "Become a Lifeguard" for all the details.
