VPD awarded $550K from U.S. DOJ Bureau of Justice Assistance’s FY24 Connect & Protect

Vallejo, CA - The Vallejo Police Department (VPD) was awarded $550,000 from the U.S. Department of Justice Bureau of Justice Assistance’s FY24 Connect and Protect: Law Enforcement Behavioral Health Response Program. These funds will support the operations of the recently launched Integrated Health and Resource Team (IHART), a mobile community crisis intervention team (CIT) established to address the specific and urgent mental and behavioral health needs in Vallejo.

Program Purpose: To expand IHART operations to be able to provide 24/7/365 mobile crisis response to residents of Vallejo, California, experiencing mental and/or behavioral health crises, reducing calls for service requiring police presence to address a chronically understaffed police department.

Primary Activities:

  • Expand IHART to achieve 24-hour, 365 operations;
  • Design, develop, and deploy an assertive community treatment-like model (ACT);
  • Educate family members and caregivers of those with SMIs/SUDs; and
  • Enhance officer and IHART staff knowledge and skills in SMI/SUD treatment.

Expected Outcomes: Increased services for individuals experiencing mental and/or behavioral health crises; reduction in calls for service requiring police presence; increased community trust

Service Area: Vallejo, California, located in Solano County

Intended Beneficiaries: Residents of Vallejo experiencing crises

Subrecipients: TabiMOMS, Felton Institute

VPD is excited to expand our partnership with Felton Institute, as well as include new partner TabiMOMS to ensure the residents of Vallejo experiencing crises are receiving appropriate, timely, and trauma-informed services. VPD understands the importance of removing police presence when appropriate to de-escalate and properly address the mental and behavioral health needs of our community.
