Hi folks,
What better way to demonstrate how unusual these times are than to show some of our Graduation photos with "Cardboard Andy". We were able to hold personalized Graduation Ceremonies for all graduates. There's even a movement afoot to make Cardboard Andy the Director of VRABE!
But despite the uncertainty we all face, the unsettled feeling that we're not in control, the sense of being adrift and the loss of our sense of normalcy, it also shows that we're in this together, that all of us - everyone at VRABE, our students, our State Consultants, our community partners - are doing the very best we can with what we have. AND we have discovered some positives as a result of this pandemic, including the greater access to education that distance learning provides to some, and the spirit of community that shared hardship often brings to an organization.
So let's all stay on course and keep steaming ahead. If we can help, reach out to us - we'll be here for you!
And if you happen to run into Cardboard Andy, DO NOT encourage him to apply to be Director of VRABE. Please!

Please welcome our new Continuing Education/ Enrichment secretary, Sherry Yarusewicz. Sherry comes to us with a wealth of knowledge and has been busy planning new Fall programs. AWARD WINNER: KIM BOBIN
At VRABE’s opening Zoom Professional Development on September 1st and with our full staff online, we awarded Kim Bobin, Wethersfield Family Learning Coordinator, the John Ryan Distinguished Friend of Adult Education Award for all the support and assistance she has given to VRABE generally and our folks at Wethersfield Family Literacy specifically. She is in every way an outstanding professional and we’re most fortunate to work with her! We were able to have one of our folks deliver, contemporaneous with the announcement of her award, a plaque memorializing it and a bouquet of flowers.

Also, at our Professional Development on September 1st, Irene Bobriwnyk received the Educator of the Year Award from VRABE. Irene has been teaching ESL (English as Second Language) students for over 40 years at our Wethersfield site.

"Thank you for quite the memorable and unexpected recognition that I received at the opening of our PD session yesterday. It was my honor and joy to work with adult students throughout the past 40 years. A lifetime of wonderful memories. Your kind and thoughtful words were very much appreciated. Just afterwards, to my surprise, Debbie K. was at my front door presenting me with a beautiful bouquet of flowers, a very unique looking awards plaque and a look alike cardboard figure of our Director Andy Rockett! What a clever idea that was......and so, we have a picture together."

NEW! ESL LUNCH AND LEARN
This is a new ESL opportunity available to all ESL teachers and their students to hear from a variety of speakers on interesting topics. This FREE series will take place twice monthly.

FREE CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION COURSES OPEN TO ALL VRABE STUDENTS
Through a partnership with Manchester Adult and Continuing Education, all VRABE students are eligible to enroll in one of their Career and Technical Education courses. Courses run from Dec. 8 to Mar. 14 and include: Microsoft 365 (Word and Excel), Keyboarding, Culinary Arts, Customer Service, ServSafe, and ACT WorkKeys (workplace documents, graphic literacy, and applied mathematics), etc.

FREE courses for students enrolled in VRABE programs and a wonderful opportunity for Intermediate and Advanced ESL students, as well as CDP, GED, or NEDP students to receive a certification. |

In an effort to maintain relationships and assist with retention we are doing weekly mailings to our family learning students. The Academy of the Arts and Learning sends the mailings to our families in a bag which includes materials and a book of the week.
