Welcome to New Faculty Member:
Early Years Music Dept. Director Gillian Hunter-Gibbs
VSOSoM Early Years Music Dept. Director Gillian Hunter-Gibbs

Building on the success of the VSO School's suite of early learning music programs, we are excited to announce the creation of a brand new full-time role:  Early Years Music Dept. Director
dedicated to strengthening and growing foundational programs for young children age 0-6 years. Gillian Hunter-Gibbs, a native Vancouverite with the highest levels of international training, experience, creativity and a love of children and community engagement, is relocating from London, England to assume this new position.

Gillian will be responsible for coordinating and developing a diversity of high-quality programs for the school's youngest students, and will also be teaching classes and lessons as a member of the faculty beginning in the 2017-2018 school year.

Gillian's most recent post was as the Education Manager for the City of London Sinfonia, a post she held since 2010, and where she developed the children's programs into one of the most respected and innovative in the UK. She holds a Bachelor of Music in Violin and Voice from UBC and received her Master's Degree in Music Education Research at the University of Cambridge, England, with a specialization in methods and techniques of music instruction for young children. In addition to her knowledge and experience of Suzuki and Orff approaches to learning, her training also includes Colourstrings training in Edinburgh and London.

Gillian is the parent of two young children, and she hopes they will be joining the VSO School of Music programs very soon.

Of her recent appointment, Gillian says: "I'm absolutely delighted to be back in my hometown of Vancouver, joining the wonderful Early Years team at the VSO School of Music. I'm excited to get to know the whole School community and to help implement your ideas for making what is already a thriving program, even stronger!"

VSOSoM Big Band Director Bob Rebagliati Talks with
CBC About Mentoring Jazz Stars of the JUNOS
JUNO winner Renee Rosnes was introduced to jazz by Bob Rebagliati

VSOSoM Big Band Director Bob Rebagliati was especially excited to hear the winners of the 2017 JUNO awards announced yesterday, because he has taught three of the jazz nominees.

Pianist and composer Renee Rosnes was introduced to jazz as a young student by Bob, or "Reb" as he is known, when he was her school band director. She won the 2017 JUNO Solo Jazz Album of the Year for her album Written in the Rocks.

2017 JUNO nominees Brandi Disterheft and Darcy Argue also credit him with improving their jazz skills. On Saturday Sheryl McKay from CBC's North by Northwest spoke with "Reb" about the success of his students, his long career in music education and the secrets of mentoring the jazz stars of the future.

His interview is the 13:31 - 26:55 portion of the audio.
