Are You Driven Like Ford Lately: Why Banking Execs Should Study the Automaker's CEO Turnover
by Mike Carter of D3 Banking

Ford recently fired its CEO Mark Fields, seemingly out of the blue. Based on the staid, risk-averse mindset that dominates much of the U.S. auto manufacturing sector, such a move seems counter-intuitive -- especially given Fields' performance. As recently as 2015, Fields produced record profits for Ford and if that is not enough to raise eyebrows, his replacement Jim Hackett has little industry experience. Hackett came to Ford in 2016 to oversee the company's self-driving car initiative, which provides a major clue as to why Fields was let go. Click HERE to read more.

Protect Your Best -- or Suffer Next "Lift Out"
by Jeff Gerrish

Who's "at risk" in your bank?  A franchise player is usually defined as an individual whose departure to a competitor would hurt the community bank significantly.

Before I go further, a warning for those who don't think their key staffers would leave: Many of the expansion-minded banks I work with will not even consider geographic expansion without a "lift out" of a key group of franchise players from a bank already in their target market.   The threat is real.

It may be a commercial lender. It may be an IT person. It may be a strong CEO. Regardless of title, the target will generally be somebody who generates revenue for the organization. The key issue is how to retain that individual (or more often, the team). Click HERE to read more.

Angling for Commercial Prospects
by Hillary Kelbick

Use this strategy to increase your catch in the commercial marketplace.

The other day I got hooked on a TV documentary about fly fishing in Montana. (Yes, the pun was intended.) And I thought, what a perfect analogy for commercial prospecting. Just like fly fishing, it's practiced mostly by solitary bankers who spend years learning the subtle skills of their craft. And just like fly fishing, it's really hard!

How can you help your sales staff with this effort? How do you cut through all the noise and the clutter, and have an impact on some of the most elusive and wily targets of all: the denizens of the C-suite at commercial companies? Maybe you need to take a cue from fly fishing, and make sure you're using the right lure to reel them in. Click HERE to read on.
A vicious cybercycle: Hackers attack, banks react, hackers strike back
by Howard Altman

In banking's cash-and-coin-only days, robbers walked up to tellers, pulled out a gun and said "stick 'em up." These days, thieves can just walk up to an ATM, unarmed, and perform a digital variation you could call "stick 'em out."

Case in point: In April, a man walked up to a Russian bank automated teller machine-which started spitting out money, literally into his hands, without his touching anything.  It was caught on closed circuit video after authorities discovered hackers robbed at least eight ATMs in Russia that way and stole $800,000 in just one night.  Click HERE to read on.
