Dear friends of VTIPG and the Community Change Collaborative,
We share five articles each week that we find timely and meaningful that address concerns related to the state of our democracy and civil society. We aim to offer pieces that illuminate significant dimensions of our country's policy and governance challenges and the state of social norms that sustain the possibility of addressing those concerns. Please note, the views expressed in these essays do not necessarily reflect the perspectives of VTIPG faculty or staff or of Virginia Tech. We upload these articles and stories to our website. You may find that archive at News and Opportunities at http://ipg.vt.edu.
All five pieces this week will focus on the results of the 2025 elections.
If you would like to suggest an article for consideration, please contact us below.
-
Our first piece this week, from The Associated Press, discussed Abigail Spanberger's historic win in the Virginia gubernatorial election.
-
A second selection published by Cardinal News, described the gains made by Democrats in the Virginia House of Delegates.
-
Our third story, from National Public Radio, highlighted key takeaways from election results nationwide.
-
Our fourth selection, from The New York Times, demonstrated that President Trump's unpopularity continues to be a drag for Republicans in elections when he is not on the ballot.
-
Last, we feature a piece from BBC News that examined the implications of the passage of Proposition 50 in California.
Brief synopses of these articles appear below. We hope the perspectives they offer encourage reflection and conversation!
Best wishes,

Abigail Spanberger elected Virginia governor in a historic first that boosts Democrats ahead of 2026
This Associated Press article reported on former Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger's historic win in the 2025 Virginia gubernatorial election. With her double-digit victory, Governor-Elect Spanberger will become the first woman ever to serve as Virginia's top executive. Democrats swept the three statewide races on the ballot, as Ghazala F. Hashmi won the lieutenant governor's race and challenger Jay Jones defeated incumbent Jayson Mirayes to become the Commonwealth's next attorney general. The authors argued that Spanberger's campaign focus on economic issues can serve as a model for other Democrats in next year's midterm elections.

Democrats see historic gains in Virginia's House of Delegates races
This article from Cardinal News discussed the Democrats' success in the Virginia House of Delegates election, which saw the party pick up 13 seats, resulting in its biggest majority in the chamber since 1989. Most notably, District 41 which includes Montgomery County, saw Democratic challenger Lily Franklin defeat incumbent Delegate Chris Obenshain in a rematch of their race two years ago. With these victories, Governor-Elect Abigail Spanberger will enter office with her party in control of all three key state executive posts and both chambers of the General Assembly.

Democrats had a big night. Here are 5 takeaways from the 2025 elections
This article, from National Public Radio, addressed the results of the 2025 elections that saw Democrats win across the country. Reporter Domenico Montanaro offered five key takeaways from the outcomes. First, Democrats successfully ran on the issue of the economy. Second, President Trump's growing unpopularity proved a drag on Republicans vying for office. Third, the gains Republicans appeared to have made with Latino voters in last year's presidential election eroded significantly. Fourth, the Democrats obtained an important boost in the redistricting race, first launched by the GOP, with easy passage of California's Proposition 50 creating additional Democratic leaning seats in that state. Lastly, the Democrats will need to consider how best to position their candidates heading into the midterm elections next year, as party standard bearers represented a mix of moderate and progressive candidates in Virginia, New Jersey, and New York.

Make no mistake: Trump is an albatross
This article, by Jamelle Bouie, argued that President Trump has clearly proven a drag on Republican Party candidates during his two terms as president. He contended that 2025 was just the latest of electoral defeats for the GOP, following losses in 2017, 2018, 2020, and 2022. Bouie suggested that the 2024 presidential election did not represent an ideological shift towards Trump or the Republican Party, but instead was driven by specific events and circumstances, particularly inflation. He concluded that this election's results represent a warning for a party that has tied its identity so closely to Trump.

California voters approve redistricting. Will it tip the balance of power in Washington?
Christal Hayes of BBC News analyzed the implications of California voters' easy passage of Proposition 50. The ballot measure called for redrawing the state's congressional districts to increase the opportunity for Democrats to win control of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm elections. California Governor Gavin Newsom proposed the amendment in response to President Trump pressuring several Republican states to redraw their congressional maps outside of normal timelines to increase the odds of the GOP maintaining control of the House in the 2026 national election. Hayes argued that although these measures, now undertaken by both parties, may offer electoral benefits in the short-term, their long-term ripple effect is likely to be increased polarization and gridlock in Congress.
