International Women's Day

International Women's Day (IWD) was on Saturday, March 8. At VWTH, we honour all of the courageous women and those who identify as women, and celebrate strength, resilience, and unity as we stand together to create positive changes in our communities, this day and every day.

On Saturday VWTH attended Women Working for Changes, presented by the International Women’s Day Society, at Ambrosia Centre. This empowering event brought women together to share their stories and amplify their voices. Special guests included women of international, Indigenous, trade union and transwomen backgrounds.

VWTH volunteer Heather (pictured holding the VWTH sign) was on the organizing committee for this event, and we thank her for her dedication to VWTH and to women’s issues and causes throughout our community.

On this International Women’s Day weekend, we also attended this year’s Victoria Women’s Expo, March 8 and 9 at Pearkes Recreation Centre. Many people dropped by the VWTH info booth at the event, met some of our volunteers like Terrie (pictured behind the table) and learned more about the programs and support services offered at VWTH to help women and children affected by intimate partner violence.

Our thanks to the Tony and Mignon Fenton Trust for support of this project.

New Shelter Playground

Thanks to an anonymous donor, our Emergency Shelter playground is getting a makeover! Actually, more than a makeover!

Brand new playground equipment has been installed, and we are so excited! Children at our Shelter are often facing trauma and crisis, and it’s very important to us to give them lots of time to let kids just be kids. With Spring Break just around the corner, the children staying with us at the Shelter will have a great time playing on this new equipment together, kindly given to us by an anonymous donor.

In Search of Laptops

VWTH is looking for 10 new or newly refurbished laptops for clients. The laptops will allow clients the ability to connect with loved ones, look for work and permanent housing, research community resources, and much more. The laptops will be divided amongst our three Shelter and transitional housing sites and will provide a lifeline for clients rebuilding their lives after experiencing intimate partner violence. If you think you can help VWTH and clients currently staying in our Emergency Shelter or transitional housing sites with the donation of a new or newly refurbished laptop, please contact us at info@vwth.bc.ca.

With Our Thanks

Thank you to Nomad Market Events for supporting Victoria Women’s Transition House once again at this year’s Fashion Splash on February 15. Hundreds came out to watch this runway-style fashion show showcasing the talented local fashion industry here on Vancouver Island. VWTH was grateful and honoured to be the beneficiary of the Fashion Splash silent auction proceeds.

Thank you to Cathy Noel, as well as the Goddess Run organizing committee, the participating sponsors and donors and all of the inspirational 850+ runners and walkers who took part in the Goddess Run at Elk Lake/Beaver Lake on March 2. The VWTH Team, the Koipanions, came together to enjoy a 5K walk, and together with Goddess participants and community donations, raised over $10,000 for VWTH programs and services. Thank you all! We are truly grateful to all the participants who chose to support VWTH through the Goddess Run.

Thank you to the Kiwanis Club of Oak Bay for your generous contribution to the PEACE/Children Who Witness Abuse program.

Thank you to Harbourside Rotary, Peninsula Co-op, Norgaard Foundation and CFAX Santa’s Anonymous for their generous support in funding our PEACE/Children Who Witness Abuse spring and summer camps. Spring Break camp starts next week, and we are so grateful to these organizations for their kind donations.

Thank you to Amir G., who donated her 2018 Toyota Yaris to Victoria Women’s Transition House. The new-to-us vehicle will be used to transport our clients throughout the CRD for appointments, health care, and much more.
