When Dr. Hultgren joined Virginia Wesleyan, the journey was just beginning and the campus was a canvas of possibilities. His steadfast dedication and belief in leaps of faith played an essential role in shaping the university we know today. Fresh out of graduate school with a Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University, he chose to invest in Virginia Wesleyan's potential and became an integral part of our growth story.
Through his tireless efforts, Dr. Hultgren established the philosophy department, infusing it with progressive ideas that transcended traditional boundaries. He encouraged students to engage actively and guided them to take leadership roles in shaping policies and initiatives. His influence was so profound that even our beloved Marlin mascot was chosen under his guidance, reflecting his commitment to student empowerment.
As a fellow alumnus who has been touched by the transformative power of a Virginia Wesleyan education, I am thrilled to announce Virginia Wesleyan's intention to name the atrium outside of Dr. Hultgren's office in Blocker Hall the "Lawrence D. Hultgren Atrium." This designation will serve as a lasting tribute to his extraordinary service and dedication.
