WHERE TO NEXT?

Good morning Traveler,

First a bit of insight into a key piece of how I plan your travels...

One of my favorite parts of what I do is coming up with ideas of experiences to have or people to meet that I think you would love but don't even know exist.

Part of how I do that is by investing time getting to know you in a Deep Dive conversation prior to planning your custom trip (and that knowledge compounds for successive trips). I then take what I learn about you, mix it with my knowledge about the destination you are going to and sometimes brainstorm with one of my on the ground partners in the country you will be visiting.

After sharing some details about a client with one of my partners last week, I received this message in return...

"Thank you so much for all that detailed information. If only all advisors could furnish me with an outline like that, as it really makes it so much easier to curate a personal experience."

That makes me smile because it is by truly getting to know you and your family that I can design a trip so that you can have the most incredible vacation and come home with shared memories that you will cherish.

I get inspiration for travel everywhere I am. This week it came from closer to home.

Last weekend I vacationed in place (my way of enjoying things even when I don't leave our community).

A few highlights... a night out to see the Banff Mountain Film Festival. Every year a local town hosts the BMFF, the Warren Miller Film Tour and select movies from the Telluride Film Festival. I love them all.

The BMFF has a mix of inspiring stories celebrating the best of mountain culture, sports and adventure. They ranged from 6 minutes to 30+ minutes long. One was about a young French woman, Nouria Newman, a "whitewater kayaking powerhouse," one of the best kayakers in the world and often the lone woman in a sea of men. She and her fellow adventurers travel the world pulling kayaks up through jungles and mountains to get to spots that have never been kayaked before. You can see a trailer here. She's an adventurer, a badass and an inspiration.

Another of our favorites was the story of Stephanie Case, a UN human rights attorney who ran ultramarathons to raise money for a women’s shelter in Kabul. She set up Free to Run and empowered thousands of women and girls who believe in education and progress to follow in her footsteps. See the story here.

If you are curious if the BMFF is coming to a town near you, you can see the world tour dates and places here. I walked away from the show with many new places and experiences on my bucket list.

We also had a belated family birthday celebration, since half our family was sick over my birthday in December. We had a family pickleball clinic led by my pickleball coach.

Although I know my family members are all athletic, what I failed to realize was how much the skill of ping pong would translate into a pickleball game. My husband's reflexes are lightning fast. My son repeatedly jumped two vertical feet in the air to slam the ball for an unreturnable hit.

You know you nailed it when your 16 year old asks when we can play again.

I have several clients who are enamored with pickleball and want to play it on vacation. Many resorts are building purpose built pickleball courts, or at least converting their tennis courts for pickleball use. If you haven't tried it yet, do it! It's a great friend and family activity. I have put together a lengthy list of resorts and spas with pickleball courts, resulting in many new places for me to visit!

This week I came across this list of 2022 Travel Photographer of the Year Contest. The first one is my absolute favorite - it's of "one of the last two Northern White rhinos left in the world, resting under a hot afternoon sun with her friend and caretaker." The winning photos will go on display at an outdoor exhibition in Bristol, England during the month of May. If you have't been to Bristol, put it on your list. It has some great boutique hotels, delicious restaurants and beautiful hikes in an AONB (Area of Natural Beauty - a UK government designation).

Many of you know I'm a mom of three kids. They are 16-21 years old. My 19 year old is leaving Friday for the second half of her gap year. She will be starting by hiking the W Trek in Patagonia and then traveling all over South America with her best friend. If you have kids, you likely have also felt the conflicting emotions of both being overwhelmingly excited for her and sad to let her go. One of the challenges of parenting.

Lots of great articles below - from 36 Hours in Madrid (one of my absolute favorite cities!) to the Rise of the 50+ Solo Woman Traveler to The biggest wellness travel trends of 2023.

If you aren't actually on vacation, what can you do to vacation in place this week? I'd love to hear your creative ideas!

Warmly,

SOGGY DOLLAR BAR

It's nearing the end of February.

Under the best winter snow conditions I'd be dreaming of warm places.

But this year has been a poor snow year so I'm craving the warmth and sunshine even more.

I have just the place.

I've been reminiscing about one of our favorite family vacations on a chartered catamaran,

island hopping in the BVIs where we went to the

Soggy Dollar Bar.

It's been around for more than 50 years.

Read up on its pirate to painkiller history here.

This is a place where the vacation spirit is pervasive.

This is what your time there may look like...

Anchor offshore in your catamaran, sailboat or yacht.

Jump in the water for a brief swim to shore.

If you are a resourceful teenager, bring your mask and look for soggy dollars buried in the sand underwater. Trust me they are there. You can see below what my kids found.

Lounge on a hammock.

Play the ring game, Jenga or toss a football.

Spend the afternoon in an Adirondack chair and make new friends.

Order a Caribbean Lobster Roll, conch fritters and...

what they are truly famous for...

Painkillers.

A tasty rum drink that originated in the 70s.

If you have a friend who is going and you are a generous person, you can even order ahead and send them a Painkiller they can claim when they arrive (their name will be on the chalkboard letting them know you thought of them).

Just don't order too many. They are strong.

🌟 In 2022 a new must visit hotel opened in Turks and Caicos. The Rock House is a stunning new property on the north shore of Providenciales sprawled across 14 oceanfront acres.

Why visit the Rock House?

  • The property feels like the Mediterranean coast with 600 feet of beachfront and peaks reaching 95 feet above sea level.
  • Their restaurant, Vita, serves traditional Italian foods with a Caribbean influence. It sits 30 feet above sea level overlooking the water and gorgeous views. For other dining options, use the complimentary taxi service to all Grace Bay Resort restaurants during your stay.
  • Enjoy a cocktail from the master mixologist while watching the sunset over the turquoise water at the Sunset Bar.
  • Spend time at the Cave Bar - an intimate setting with natural rock walls that make it seem like you are in Greece.
  • Enjoy activities arranged by the hotel including sailing, diving, snorkeling, fishing, golfing, kayaking and yoga.
  • For the ultimate adventure, schedule a drop off on a secluded beach or uninhabited island. You will be taken by boat to your own private beach with chairs, umbrellas, a cooler and more. Enjoy the peacefulness!
  • You are looking for a more adult centered getaway. This isn't a property where I would send families with young children.

One of my colleagues who was at Rock House a few months ago said, “Rock House felt as though I found a secluded Mediterranean hideaway in the Turks & Caicos. The views are stunning. The staff are lovely. One of my favorite memories was sipping cocktails lounging next to their spectacular infinity pool overlooking the bluest water I have ever seen."

Of course it comes with the VIP treatment and amenities as a Truvay Travel client.

Opinion This isn’t the ‘end of ambition’ for young Americans. It’s a redefining of it. Washington Post

"A two-week vacation wasn’t enough.

Some asked their employer for a few months off. Others just quit and lived off savings. Tellingly, no one I talked to regretted their break. All said some variation of the same thing: The time away forced them to reflect on who they were outside their job and what they wanted out of life."
