COVID Vaccine Rx Update

The FAFP has received concerns from members regarding certain pharmacies in Florida requiring a physician's prescription for patients to receive a COVID-19 vaccine. The Florida Board of Pharmacy met on September 23, 2025, and affirmed that pharmacists who have a written protocol with a physician are allowed to administer the vaccine. This is consistent with the CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practice's (ACIP) recommendation which, last week, also voted against the need for a prescription. It is the FAFP's understanding that most, if not all, major pharmacies in Florida have COVID-19 vaccines available for administration and patients can make appointments via online resources or just walk-in for first availability. Please email Jay Millson (jmillson@fafp.org) if you are still experiencing difficulty with patients needing prescriptions for COVID-19 vaccines and include the specific pharmacy(s) so the FAFP can investigate and advocate accordingly.

Special On-Demand Webinar: Navigating the Vaccine Conversation

With the recent discussions surrounding vaccine mandates in Florida, the FAFP felt it was appropriate to re-release a relevant lecture presented by FAFP Past President Dr. Christy Cavanagh at the FAFP 2025 Summer Forum:  "Navigating the Vaccine Conversation: Responding to 10 Common Parental Concerns". This non-CME lecture can be accessed on-demand at your convenience. The presentation will:

  • help identify and understand the common reasons parents refuse childhood vaccines, including misconceptions about vaccine safety, religious beliefs, and misinformation.
  • review evidence-based communication techniques to address parents’ concerns empathetically and effectively, fostering trust and open dialogue
  • assist family physicians in providing parents with accurate, up-to-date information about vaccine safety and efficacy, using clear, non-technical language to dispel myths and provide reassurance

This information is aligned with the FAFP's recent advisory on Florida's vaccine requirements and how the Academy is responding to the prospect of removing vaccine mandates for children in Florida.
