Expanding Diabetes Screening:
A Call to Action for Family Physicians
Through an unrestricted grant from Sanofi, the Maryland Chapter is outreaching to key state chapters to encourage grassroots family physicians to review the new (2025) ADA guidelines and implement screening for appropriate patients within your panel.
Early Detection through Antibody Screening for Type 1 Diabetes
As family physicians, we play a critical role in encouraging discussions with our patients. Many individuals are unaware that predictive screening is available, yet early detection could lead to proactive strategies and improved long-term outcomes.

| | FAFP President to Testify at Vaccine Workshop | | |
The Florida Department of Health (DOH) is hosting a workshop on Friday, December 12 to solicit public feedback regarding the department's reported desire to eliminate vaccine mandates for school-aged children. The DOH currently mandates, by administrative rule, the four vaccines in question (Hepatitis B, Varicella, Hib, and Pneumococcal Conjugate) while nine additional vaccines are mandated by Florida Statute. FAFP President Dr. Danielle Carter, as well as contracted legal counsel, will be attending the workshop to present testimony in support of maintaining the vaccines in rule along with representatives from the FL Chapter of AAP and other medical societies. An update as to the outcome of the workshop will be provided next week, but rest assured the FAFP will continue to advocate for maintaining the current vaccine requirements for school-aged children in both rule and statute.
| | 2026 Legislative Session and Doctor of the Day | | |
The Florida Legislature is in its last week of interim committee meetings this week in Tallahassee with the main topics concerning family physicians being identified in the current FAFP Capitol Update. A Health Policy Update was presented last weekend at the FAFP's 2025 Winter Summit in Amelia Island where FAFP leaders Drs. Daniel Montero and Michael Swartzon were joined by FAFP political consultant, Mr. Jim Daughton regarding expectations for the 2026 session and how family physicians can engage in the process. For any members interested in serving as Doctor of the Day during the 60 day session (January 13-march 13), please contact FAFP EVP Jay Millson (jmillson@fafp.org).
