Vail Recreation District and Dobson Ice Arena

The Vail Recreation District has opened registration for fall and winter skating and hockey programs at Dobson Ice Arena. Tailored to children and youth ages 4-14, the VRD offers a wide variety of programs for all interests and abilities, from learning to skate programs up to our more advanced specialty classes for aspiring figure skaters and hockey players.


Learn to Skate USA
Wednesdays | 4-4:45 p.m. or 4:30-5:15 p.m. | $105 | Ages 4-14

Session 3       Feb. 27-April 17

Learn to Skate USA is for all skaters who want to learn to ice skate, whether you plan on being a hockey player, figure skater, or just want to learn another winter recreational activity. This program offers instruction in a group setting and will teach the basics of ice skating.

Jr. Prep, Jumps & Spins

Mondays | 4:15-4:45 p.m. | Must pass Level 5

Session 1       Oct. 8-Nov. 12 (6 classes)       $90
Session 2       Jan. 7-Feb. 18 (7 classes)       $105
Session 3       Feb. 25-April 15 (8 classes)    $120

This class is designed for skaters who have passed Level 5 to continue to grow in a group setting. This is a great transition from our Learn to Skate USA program into our more advanced levels before making the commitment to competition or private lessons.

Theater on Ice

Wednesdays | 5:15-5:45 p.m. | $105 | Must pass Level 2 or higher

Theater on Ice is set up for skaters to express their theatrical traits on the ice. This program focuses on the art of performing.

Freestyle Skating Sessions
Mornings throughout the week | $6/30 minutes

Freestyle sessions are available on a first come, first served basis. The fee is $7 per 30 minute session. Freestyle sessions are currently open to all levels. Skating instructors must contact Dobson Arena before teaching privately.

Story Time Skating
Wednesdays | Oct. 3-April 15 | 10 a.m. & 11 a.m. | $10

Children can enjoy story hour at the Town of Vail Library paired with skating at Dobson Ice Arena, with skating time at either 10 a.m. or 11 a.m. Skating is $10 per child for skates and instruction. There is no charge for story time at the library, toddler story time is at 10 a.m. followed by pre-school story time at 11 a.m. No registration is required.


VRD Youth Hockey: Mites and Mini Mites
Thursdays & Sundays | Ages 5-8 | $260 for both seasons

Session 1        Oct. 4-Dec. 16    $160
Session 2        Jan. 6-March 7   $160

Mini Mites (ages 5 and 6, birth years 2013 and 2012) and Mites (ages 7 and 8, birth years 2010 and 2011) will learn the fundamentals of ice hockey through fun and educational instruction and enjoy an introduction to competition.

Both groups practice from 4:15 to 5:15 p.m. on Thursdays. Mini Mites practice from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Sundays and Mites practice from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Sundays. A couple of weekends each season will include scheduled games at the Eagle Ice Rink. Mites will also have the opportunity to play teams from Glenwood Springs, Aspen and Summit. 

NEW! Girls Youth Hockey
Tuesdays | 4:15-5:15 p.m. | Ages 9 and up | $100 per season

Session 1        Oct. 16-Dec. 18
Session 2        Jan. 8-March 12

Designed to encourage interest and confidence in the sport for both novice and experienced skaters. There may be equipment available for rent or purchase depending on size, but not guaranteed. 


Public Skating
$3 for ages 4 and under, $6 for ages 5-12, $7 for ages 13 and older | Rentals $3 | All ages
For the recreational skater, Dobson Ice Arena hosts open skating sessions for all ages and abilities. Days and times vary throughout the fall and winter, please see our online calendar for details. Season punch cards are available.

Public Stick & Puck Hockey
$5 per person | Must wear a helmet
Players looking for their hockey fix can drop-in to stick and puck hockey throughout the fall and winter at Dobson Ice Arena. Only $5 to play, schedule will vary:  please see our online calendar for details.
