Nuclear War & Weapons Film Week Feb 20-26
|
27 years removed from the end of the Cold War, over 14,000 working nuclear warheads still remain around the world. The US and Russia account for over 90% of this total, with those remaining being split between the UK, France, China, India, Pakistan, Israel, and perhaps most infamously, North Korea. Even as the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) wins a Nobel Peace Prize in 2017 for their tireless work, conflict continues to become increasingly more possible between two nuclear states, Kim Jong-Un's North Korea and the US under the Trump administration, and the issue of nuclear war is as relevant as ever.

From the Blog: Why I'm Bringing PJC Programs to my School
|
-Willoughby Carlo, Senior at Mount Mansfield Union High School
In this current political climate, discussions surrounding race-related issues can be heated and controversial. As a senior who will be leaving Vermont in just a few short months and who will be meeting people from around the country and world, I want to understand these issues, their history and the best ways to deal with controversy in a positive and productive way. That is why I am working in collaboration with the Peace & Justice Center to bring a 4-part series of documentary screenings and workshops that address these issues to my high school this winter.

Action Highlight: Help Raise Minimum Wage
|
Take action today to lift working Vermonters out of poverty! The
Senate may vote as early as Thursday on a bill (S.40) to raise the minimum wage to $15 by 2024. While Peace & Justice Center would prefer this by 2022 (or even
tomorrow!), this is major step in the right direction and will affect over 70,000 workers.
Many Senators are in support, but need to hear from you. Others can be convinced by contacts from their constituents. Please
call or email today with this message:
Dear Senator _____, I support a $15 minimum wage for Vermont, and I'd like us to get there by 2024 or even sooner. Please vote yes on Senate bill 40.
Here is an easy place to
find contact information for your senator. You can search by town or by name. You will get their email addresses and personal phone numbers. Phone calls are most effective but emails are way better than nothing!
Please email or call just your Senators for now. But stay tuned -- if this makes it from the Senate to the House, your representative will need to hear from you with a similar message. If you want more info, check out this great
info sheet from our friends at Rights and Democracy. Thanks for your role in making change happen in Vermont!
