According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,
heart disease is the leading cause of death in the US for both men
and women. Every year 785,000 Americans have their first heart
attack. One of the most important ways to avoid being one of these
statistics is to eat a heart healthy diet. According to Jonny
Bowden in The Most Effective Ways
to Live Longer, wild salmon is the ultimate brain
food as well as the ultimate heart food. Wild caught salmon, as opposed to farm
raised, is full of anti-inflammatory omega-3's without the
chemicals often found in farm raised fish. Our wild caught salmon,
available in fillets, canned, pouched or as jerky, is caught off the coast
of Alaska and is certified sustainable by the Marine Stewardship
Council.
Another important staple of a heart healthy diet is grass-fed
meats. Grass-fed products have a higher omega-3:6 ratio than their
grain-fed counterparts. The anti-inflammatory properties of
omega-3's are beneficial in helping prevent heart disease, and
according to WebMD, research shows that
omega-3's can help boost the immune system, protecting us from a
wide variety of other diseases.

Study Shows NO Link Between Red Meat and
Heart Disease
Well here is something we have
known for years but now it's official:
There is no link between red meat and coronary heart disease.
Period. In a new study, published in the journal Circulation,
Harvard researchers, in the US, analyzed 20 studies that compared
health outcomes of people who eat red meat and processed meat. The
combined studies included well over one million subjects. And, not
surprisingly to many of us, red meat intake was not associated with
either heart disease or type 2 diabetes.
The Harvard study also confirmed something else we already knew:
Regular commercially processed meat is junk. Hot dogs. Bacon.
Sausage. Lunch meats. For the most part - all junk.
The Harvard team reports a 42% higher risk of heart disease linked
to consistent eating of processed meat, and nearly 20% higher risk
of type 2 diabetes. So the meat naysayers will tell you the
processed meats are so bad because of the saturated fats and the
cholesterol... but they'll be wrong again. Saturated fat and
cholesterol content were the same in unprocessed red meat and
processed meat.
The dangers in the processed meat are due to chemical preservatives
and high sodium levels. Of course, that detail will be a hard sell
to your vegetarian friends who swear that animal fats are
equivalent to arsenic. The fact is, saturated fats and essential
fatty acids are vital for your body to absorb critical fat-soluble
vitamins A, D, E, and K.
If you never eat a single bacon-wrapped hot dog, and you regularly
enjoy a t-bone or a sirloin steak, you're on the
right track. But to make that steak real health
food, there's one more thing to look out for. When California State
University researchers reviewed research that compared grass-fed beef
with grain-fed beef, they found higher levels of omega-3 fatty
acids, vitamins A and E,
and conjugated linoleic
acid (CLA) in grass-fed. In fact, CLA levels were twice as high
- no small thing, given the evidence that CLA helps manage blood
sugar and insulin levels, while also reducing risks of cancer,
osteoporosis, and atherosclerosis.
Grass-fed beef is also far less likely to contain the antibiotics
and hormones typically found in commercial meat. So enjoy quality
meat and get the superior nutrition it offers - without worrying
about the fat or cholesterol intake.

Catherine's Comment

Hope for
School Lunches
What do Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution and Michelle Obama have in
common? Both are working hard at changing-for the better-kids'
school lunches. And it's about time!
Our kids have been eating processed, salty, sugary, starchy, low
nutrition foods at school and snacking on candy, chips and soda for
far too long. Research shows there are many reasons to make the
change for the better and with the media spotlight and public
awareness on this subject, major changes may be just around the
corner.
First lady Michelle Obama is urging Congress to pass the Child
Nutrition Bill that will raise nutritional standards for school
meals. The bill will require more fruit, vegetables, and whole
grains in school lunches and breakfasts, and cut back on salt and
fats. Vending machines will offer healthier snacks instead of soda,
candy and chips.
"We owe it to the children who aren't reaching their potential
because they're not getting the nutrition they need during the
day," the first lady wrote. In her essay to Congress, she wrote
that "our prosperity depends on the health and vitality of the next
generation."
The bill was approved by the House Education and Labor Committee
last month, and a Senate committee has approved similar
legislation. However, Congressional passage will be the first step.
The details of this bill, including the actual food offered will be
left up to the Agriculture Department. So this movement, while on
the right track, could be watered down by the time it officially
reaches the schools.
Almost a third of all kids in the United States are overweight, and
rates of childhood obesity have nearly tripled over the last thirty
years. More than 55 million children receive lunch (and sometimes
breakfast, too) via public school programs every day, but a large
portion of meals offered in schools include things like French
fries, chicken nuggets, pizza, bagged chips, chocolate milk.
Food-if you can call it that-that is full of trans fats, excess
sodium, preservatives, high fructose corn syrup, and is heavily
processed, frozen, and wastefully packaged.
Although the awareness has increased over the past few years, the
challenges public schools face are still considerable: the U.S.
Department of Agriculture allots only $2.68 in funding per day for
each student meal, and reform seems painfully slow in coming. This
year's re-budgeting of the Childhood Nutrition Act--the bill which
covers all school food as well as other nutrition benefits for
low-income kids-is an opportunity to introduce change from the
highest levels of government. There has never been a better time
for us to find out what our kids are eating, speak up, get involved
and push for change...

Turn Your
"Digestion Gene" Back On
By: Al Sears, MD
Dear Health-Conscious Reader,
Did you know that you could be eating all the right nutrients but
not absorbing them?
In order to build muscle, strengthen your immune system, and get
the energy you need throughout the day, the nutrients you eat have
to get absorbed in your digestive tract. And that requires
digestive enzymes.
There's the rub. Because there's something in our modern diet that
may be stopping you from producing the digestive enzymes you need.
Let me explain...
In four weeks, a high-glucose diet was found to shut down the gene
that creates digestive enzymes. Food wouldn't move through the
digestive tract, and it couldn't be absorbed. Digestive enzymes
turn what you eat into vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients so
your body can absorb it. Without digestive enzymes, you can't take
in the nutrients you need to feed your cells. Your cells can't make
the energy they need to stay healthy. When your cells run out of
energy, your body breaks down, and you develop disease.
You probably already know what sugar does to you. It gives you
cravings and makes you hungry all the time. You gain weight and
become depressed. Sugar throws off your hormones and gives you
diabetes. It feeds cancer cells and increases your chance of
having a heart attack. ,
Now, look at what happens if you stop producing digestive enzymes.
Protease, amylase, and lipase are groups of enzymes that digest
proteins, carbohydrates, and fats:
- Protease digests proteins. But parasites, fungus, bacteria, and
viruses are protein. Without protease, you have nothing to eat away
at them. You lose your defense against intestinal bugs, candida,
infections, or viruses.
- Amylase digests carbohydrates. But amylase also digests things
like pus, which is dead white blood cells. Without amylase, you can
develop pus-filled infections like abscesses or other skin
conditions. Or, you could develop a lung condition.
- Lipase digests fats. Lipase digests fat and nutrients like
vitamin E and fish oil. If you don't have enough lipase to digest
fat-soluble nutrients, you can develop high cholesterol, diabetes,
and heart disease.
To make sure you have enough digestive enzymes, keep sugar out of
your diet as much as you can:
- In general, foods that are naturally sweet are okay to eat as
they are. Just don't take food that is not sweet naturally and make
them sweet.
- Choose fresh fruits like strawberries, blueberries, and pears
for your sweet treat. These naturally sweet foods come with an
added bonus: Fresh fruits increase digestive enzymes in your
body.
- Avoid flavored waters and drinks that contain added sugar. Make
your own by adding fresh fruit or cucumber, limes, and lemons to
water.
- If you must sweeten any food or drink, do like we do in the
office and just add a little good old-fashioned raw sugar or honey.
To Your Good Health,
Al Sears, MD

One Great Reason to Avoid Cholesterol Lowering
Drugs
I've been called a lot of different
things. Science Nerd... Professor... and Cholesterol Lowering Drug
Nazi are among those that can be mentioned here. The only one I'll
admit to is being a Cholesterol Lowering Drug Nazi.
Cholesterol lowering drugs (statins) amass billions of dollars each
year pretending to be a safe and effective way to protect against
heart disease. Yet science shows that these drugs represent a clear
and present danger to your health. In addition to lowering
cholesterol, they elicit some really nasty side-effects. Lou
Gehrig's (ALS) disease is just one of them.
ALS occurs when cells of the nervous system (brain and spinal
chord) become inactive. This can result from many cellular
dysfunctions. But it usually results from a protein entanglement
within the nerve cell. Once tangled, these cells can no longer pass
electrical messages through the body, resulting in a loss of
voluntary muscle control. As time passes, muscle wasting (a Science
Nerd would call it atrophy) results. Victims of ALS usually die
from inability to breathe when muscle loss has reached an
extreme.
The national average of those who suffer from ALS is a mere .0005
percent. But - sit down for this one - among those who reported
suffering from "drug induced ALS," nearly a third were using
cholesterol lowering drugs! Apparently, this class of drugs can
"tangle" a protein known as "tau proteins".
But protecting yourself from premature heart disease does not mean
you have to put yourself at risk of wiping out your nervous system.
You can do it with four simple tactics: Minimize your sugar intake,
take part in interval training, maintain healthy vitamin D levels
by spending time in the sun, beef liver, chicken liver, grass-fed butter, raw Amish grass-fed cheese and
supplementing with cod liver oil.

Dear
Dr. Serrano,
What is the best food for a long
endurance sport? I run marathons and most of the other runners
carb-load, but I have heard this can make you "hit the wall"
earlier in the race. What is the best energy food for
this?
Thank you,
Dave M.
______________________________________________
Dear Dave,
First of all, congratulations to you for being a dedicated
athlete. I applaud your efforts! In response to your question on
carb loading, I will say that energy provides the best fuel for
long term endurance events. Your body will burn the energy more
efficiently and will then turn to burning your own fat for
energy.
If you are eating carbs, then your liver can only store so much as
energy, and then you will run out and 'hit the wall'. I recommend
good quality pemmican from U.S. Wellness
Meats. It will fuel your body with plenty of energy to spare.
All the best,
Dr. Serrano

Need A Training Lift?
By: Scott Mendelson
Scott,
I hear a lot of conflicting info regarding training for fat loss
from other female friends and trainers. Some say cardio is the key
and others weight training. I am not sure what to do, but I know
that for the last 2 years I have not reached my goals, hitting a
plateau after about 8 weeks which has led me to quit all together.
My legs and buttocks are a mess, what can I do to firm them
up?
Mary
______________________________________
Firming Up the Backside and Slashing Body
Fat ASAP
Mary,
Mary the right combination of interval cardio, weight training and
nutrition planning can get you to where you want to go FAST! It
sounds like there has not been a cohesive strategy in the past
which would account for hitting a wall. Factors must change
strategically to keep progress going! My clients avoid plateaus by
having the right program designs which FORCE the body to use more
stored fat as fuel through many pathways.
Weight Training
is Highly Effective for PERMANENT Fat Loss!
Let's bust some myths- weight training is not only for men!
Furthermore weight training correctly for fat loss, not
bodybuilding will prevent any unwanted accumulation of excess
muscle mass. In a majority of cases females use body building
oriented routines that do not align with their goals. I structure
routines to torch body fat! There are many factors to consider
when building programs, which is why I consistently collect data
from clients so that the proper refinements can be made- preventing
any progress plateaus.
Interval Cardio for Rapid Fat
Loss
Interval cardio is far more effective for fat loss than the
traditional steady state walk or run to nowhere. Pending the
client's fitness level, interval plans are built strategically to
get fat loss going. A short 10-20 minute session a couple times
per week will do wonders for body fat loss. See for yourself and
request the 10 minute interval plan.
Proper Execution
For a Great set of Buns!
You will not see an improvement in the firmness of any body part
without resistance training. Many women come to me with the same
complaint and within a short period of time improvements come via
proper training and fat loss. The Glutes are typically a neglected
muscle since poor training techniques do not recruit them
properly. The routine below is a great start for you, pay close
attention to form and execution as this will have a huge impact on
your rate of success. For example, pushing explosively off the
front foot will help to increase glute recruitment. Make sure you
go through a full range of motion and do not "cheat" by going only
partially through the movements. People with injuries or other
limitations will have to take a different approach
initially...

What
Our Customers Are Saying
|
Hello John,
Well, once again I have to tell you and all involved that I love receiving and
reading the US Wellness Newsletters and the photos of those
contented cows. I did not grow up on a farm, although I lived
across the street from one, so I'm a little sensitive to those
faces that stare at me in the photos. I think if I were to visit
the US Wellness farms and see the cattle in person I might just
become a vegetarian!
When I see clips on TV of mass produced cattle being mistreated I
just don't know how anyone can be a part of such a tragic thing.
These animals deserve our respect because, although they don't know
it, they are a key part to the health and well being of
mankind.
I'm thankful for families like yours, who seem to understand the
balance of nature and who treat these animals so well during their
short lives. Please thank all of the farm families for me.
Without all of you and your commitment, people such as myself would
not have access to the kind of meat that contributes to our good health and
enjoyment. Don't forget to thank your cattle for me as well!
Sincerely,
Laurie R.
