VALLEJO, CA –
During the City Council meeting on June 9, 2020,
Council adopted a resolution requesting that the California Attorney General
conduct an additional third-party investigation into the June 2, 2020, officer-involved shooting. A copy of the resolution will be sent to Attorney General, Xavier Becerra’s office.
The City’s request to the California Attorney General’s Office will ask for a thorough and independent criminal investigation into the shooting involving a Vallejo Police Department Officer and Sean Monterrosa, a 22-year-old male from San Francisco.
If the Attorney General moves forward with an investigation, it will be the third concurrent review of the officer-involved shooting. Currently, the Solano County District Attorney’s Office is conducting an investigation into the incident. The City has engaged OIR Group to provide an outside third-party review of the incident, replacing the normal investigations process, where the Vallejo Police Department
Professional Standards Unit would conduct an internal police standards investigation.
“As with all police incidents like this, there is intense public interest, and that interest is shared by the City Council. For some members of the public, the standard processes do not alleviate their concerns about independence, and turning to the Cal DoJ is a logical next step,” stated Vallejo Mayor Bob Sampayan. “We appreciate the chance to have an extra level of assurance in this investigation.”

statement
issued on June 3, 2020, from the Vallejo Police Department.
