VALLEJO, CA - On August 22, 2026, at approximately 6:12 p.m., Vallejo Police Department (VPD) officers responded to the 900 block of Virginia Street after receiving a report of an 18-month-old child who was not breathing. While officers were responding, VPD Communications provided an update that the child was choking on a grape.
A VPD officer arrived and immediately began providing first aid to the child. Relying on his training, the officer administered emergency care and successfully dislodged the grape from the child's airway, allowing the child to breathe again.
Vallejo Fire Department personnel arrived and provided additional medical care. The child was subsequently transported to a local hospital in stable condition for further evaluation.
Although VPD officers respond to a wide range of public safety incidents, their training also prepares them to provide immediate assistance during medical emergencies. In this case, the officer's training, quick response, and immediate action helped a young child during a critical emergency.
"Our officers serve our community in various ways, including responding to medical emergencies where every second is crucial," Chief Jason Ta stated. "This officer remained calm, relied on his training, and took immediate action when the child needed help. I am proud of his response and the professionalism he displayed. Most importantly, I am grateful that the young child is safe and received the care they needed."
VPD is grateful for the positive outcome and for the coordinated efforts of everyone who provided care to the child.
