Together in Christ
Dear Presbytery Family,
A friend recently told me a story that still makes me laugh. She and her mother had planned a relaxing spa day together. After her massage ended, she went to the waiting room looking for her mom. Unfortunately, her contact lenses had fogged over, and everything was a little blurry.
She spotted who she thought was her mother and sat down beside her. Her “mom” was scrolling on Facebook, something she never does. So, my friend loudly commented on it, while looking over her shoulder. Then she reached into the bowl of nuts her “mom” was eating to pick out her favorites. And then her contacts cleared.
Looking up, she exclaimed, "You are not my mother!"
Imagine the surprise of the poor stranger! Later that day, my friend saw the woman again, pointing her out to a companion and retelling the story with laughter.
The story is funny because all of us know what it feels like to misperceive a situation. We think we know what we're seeing, only to discover that our vision is clouded. The same thing can happen in our life of faith. We make assumptions about others, about congregations, about communities, and even about what God is doing among us. Sometimes we need our spiritual "contacts" cleaned before we can see clearly.
Jesus often challenged people to look again. The very people others overlooked became examples of faith. The places that seemed ordinary became settings for God's extraordinary work. Again and again, Christ invited his followers to move beyond first impressions and see with God's eyes.
As we continue our ministry together across the presbytery, may God clear our vision. May we discover, often with surprise and joy, that God is at work in places and people we did not expect. May God give us both grace and clarity: grace to see one another and ourselves with compassion, and clarity to recognize where the Spirit is already at work among us.
"Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law." (Psalm 119:18)
Together in Christ,
With courage, devotion and good spirit as a colleague,
Rev. Beth Buckwalter-Miller

Position Opening: Stated Clerk of the Presbytery of Minnesota Valleys
Before the rumor mill gets started, let me assure you that our current Stated Clerk, Rev. Pamela Prouty, is not going anywhere! :) Every five years, the Presbytery is required to post and review this position as part of our regular process. Our current clerk intends to reapply, and we are deeply grateful for her faithful service. This posting is not the result of a resignation or departure, but rather our commitment to following established procedures and prayerfully discerning God's call for this important ministry. It may not be the most exciting requirement of church governance, but it does help keep us all on the same page.
The Presbytery of Minnesota Valleys is seeking applicants for the position of Stated Clerk. This is a 14-hour-per-week position with a five-year term.
The Stated Clerk serves as a key officer of the presbytery, supporting the work of congregations, commissions, and presbytery leadership by maintaining records, providing guidance on church polity, and ensuring the orderly conduct of presbytery business.
Individuals interested in learning more about the position or requesting a full copy of the job description are encouraged to contact:
Rev. Brian Jones
Email: brianwjones1980@hotmail.com
Phone: cell: (605) 204-0625, church: (320) 796-2650
We invite prayers as the presbytery discerns who God is calling to this important ministry of service and leadership.

What Does Per Capita Provide?
Per Capita is how Presbyterians collectively fund the shared work of the church. In 2026, the Per Capita amount is $47 per member per year, divided among the Presbytery ($30.24), Synod ($5.50), and General Assembly ($11.26).
Broken down monthly, that's about $4 per month. For many of us, that's the cost of a cup of coffee or a gallon of gas. Yet that $4 helps support the entire Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) structure, from local ministry through national leadership.
When everything is going smoothly in a congregation, it can be hard to see the value of Per Capita. The church is like a train running smoothly down the track. But when a crisis emerges, conflict arises, or an unexpected challenge threatens the congregation's future, that's when the value of a connected church becomes clear.
Our congregation experienced that firsthand. When a serious issue arose, our first reaction was, "How are we going to handle this?" No one in the church had the expertise needed to address the situation. We reached out to the Presbytery, but at first our need wasn't fully understood. It took a few conversations, some persistence, and a clearer explanation of what we were facing before the right resources could be brought to bear.
Once the situation became clear, the response was immediate. Within days, Presbytery leaders were involved, drawing on resources from the Presbytery, Synod, and national church to help us navigate the challenge. Looking back, we are convinced that without that support our congregation would have struggled to find a path forward and may not have survived.
That experience taught us two important lessons. First, Per Capita funds far more than administration. It provides access to relationships, expertise, leadership, and support when churches need it most. Second, the Presbytery is here to help, but effective support often grows through ongoing conversation. Sometimes it takes steady communication and partnership for needs to be fully understood and the best assistance to emerge.
We are grateful for the connectional ministry of the PC(USA) and for the way Per Capita makes that ministry possible.

New Cemetery Guide Resource for Churches
The Presbyterian Foundation has created a helpful new Cemetery Guide for churches and mid councils, offering both theological insight and practical guidance for the care, preservation, and management of church cemeteries. A cemetery inventory form is also available to assist mid councils in gathering important information from congregations. The guide and form can be downloaded here: https://www.presbyterianfoundation.org/cemetery-guide/
As we share this resource, we also invite any churches within the presbytery that own or maintain a cemetery to let us know. This information will help us better understand and support these important ministries. We also noted that the Cemetery Inventory form does not include a place to indicate whether veterans are buried there—something we recognize as important information to gather as well.

From The Ministry Lab
A few months ago, a few congregations started receiving letters from churches across the country who wanted us to know we weren't alone during a crisis. We read them aloud in worship as a Pauline-like Epistle. They inspired us!
That experience sparked the idea for KinMN. What if this kind of connection happened regularly?
KinMN pairs ecumenical urban and rural congregations with a desire to connect across Minnesota. It starts with letters written from one congregation to another, read aloud in worship and shared in print. From there, relationships can flourish as churches decide.
So many congregations do amazing work, feeling like they're acting alone. Imagine what's possible when two communities learn about each other and share their strengths. KinMN is built on mutuality, inviting congregations to encourage, imagine, and build one another up.
If interested, we’ll make a match. You write the letters.
Learn more and RSVP here.
KinMN is offered through The Ministry Lab in conversation with The MN Conference UCC, the PTCA, the ECMN, and MN ELCA synods.

Would you like to join our Pulpit Supply Ministry Team???
The Presbytery, through the Commission on Leadership, maintains a pulpit supply list which can be found on the Presbytery website or by contacting Tina Halvorson. Each person listed has successfully completed a background check. We are always looking for pastor's and ruling elders to add to our list! If you know someone or are interested yourself, please let the presbytery office know. We would like to have people on the list from every corner of our Presbytery, so churches have someone in their own neighborhood to call when they have a need!
Those providing pulpit supply receive $150 if preaching at one service, and $200 if preaching at two on the same day, plus reimbursement for mileage at the current IRS rate.
Please note, if you are filling a pulpit more than two times in succession, you do need permission from our Commission on Leadership. Just email or call our COL co-chairs, Louella Voigt and Rev. Andy Davis with your request.

Looking ahead to 2027
From the Board of Pension
Greetings,
Earlier this summer at the 227th General Assembly (2026) in Milwaukee, Krysten Carter Holloway was confirmed as President & CEO of our agency. We are delighted for Krysten to join us as we serve the Church together. We also heard the call for choice of coverage options for installed ministers by the General Assembly. The Board is committed to listening, understanding, and having continued conversations with the Church about how we can serve the PC(USA) in the future.
This month, our Board of Directors met, and below I share information that impacts your congregations. You can read more details about actions taken at the July Board of Directors meeting in the Board Bulletin.
Post-Retirement Medical Plan update
In March, we announced that we will no longer offer the Humana Group Medicare Advantage PPO and Prescription Drug plans next year. Beginning Jan. 1, 2027, we will offer the UnitedHealthcare Group Medicare Advantage PPO Plan (a passive PPO plan), with Part D prescription drug coverage through Express Scripts. You can learn more about this decision here.
Coverage will be available to individuals currently enrolled in Humana as well as members who retire in 2027. Staff planning to retire in 2026 may still enroll in Humana and will remain enrolled through Dec. 31.
Now available: 2027 medical dues for benefits packages
Directors approved increases in 2027 medical dues for the Congregational Pastors Package and Transitional Pastor’s Participation. This decision reflects the ongoing reality of rising healthcare costs. We understand the challenge these increases present to congregations, particularly those with more limited resources, and ministers in need of family coverage. For ministers enrolled in the Congregational Pastors Package, a new dues subsidy to help alleviate the cost of medical coverage for children will begin Jan. 1, 2027. You can find 2027 dues here.
Good news: Beginning in 2027, the Congregational Pastors Package will be extended to include ministers of the Word and Sacrament and ruling elders who are elected to serve in mid council leadership.
To help determine a dues package and any cost-sharing, our decision guide has been updated with 2027 dues. Employer representatives can review 2027 benefits and make decisions Sept. 4 through Oct. 2, when Employer Agreements are available in Benefits Connect.
The PPO is now the PPO Premier
In March, we announced that the 2027 Medical Plan will include six high-quality coverage options for non-installed ministers and lay staff. These include the existing PPO, EPO, and HDHP options — renamed Premier — along with three new Select options that offer similar features with different out-of-pocket costs for care. Pastors and their family members enrolled in medical coverage through dues packages will continue to have the PPO option (now PPO Premier) in 2027. Coverage features remain unchanged.
Register now for Disability Benefits: A Safety Net for Both Members and Employers
Next month, a new webinar explains how disability benefits for illness, injury, maternity leave, or mental health-related absences support both members and employers. Registration is now open.. As a reminder, disability benefits are included in all dues packages and may be offered to eligible ministers and staff as a standalone benefit so that they, too, have this important income protection.
We encourage you to share this webinar registration with congregations and ministers so that they understand how and when to use these important benefits. You may use the webinar description found on this page to promote it in your upcoming communications.
I pray you have a great rest of your summer. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to support you.
With gratitude,
Rev. Dr. Ken Green
Church Consultant, Board of Pensions

Greetings,
The time to select benefits for 2027 is fast approaching. All the benefits available in 2026, plus a few new options, are available for you to offer staff in 2027.
As you begin to consider benefits options and make selections, know that we are here to support faithful decision-making with information, resources, and personalized service. We are committed to helping you make benefits decisions that best meet your needs.
Employer Agreement dates and next steps
Your Employer Agreement for 2027 benefits will soon be available in Benefits Connect.
From Friday, Sept. 4, 2026, through Friday, Oct. 2, 2026, designated employer representatives can log in to Benefits Connect to review benefits options and pricing for 2027, make selections, and submit their Employer Agreement. If you’re not making any changes to your benefits selections, there is no need to submit an Employer Agreement.
Learn more about selecting benefits for 2027.
What’s new for 2027
Ministers of the Word and Sacrament and ruling elders who are elected to serve in mid council leadership may be enrolled in the Congregational Pastors Package for 2027. Please call us if you would like to enroll eligible staff in this dues package beginning Sept. 4, when your Employer Agreement is available.
The 2027 Benefits Plan also includes three additional Medical Plan options. Ministers and eligible family members enrolled in the Congregational Pastors Package or Transitional Pastor’s Participation will continue to be offered medical coverage in the existing PPO option, renamed PPO Premier for 2027.
Learn more about what’s new for 2027.
Medical Plan pricing requests
Please call the Board as soon as possible to request Medical Plan pricing if you plan to offer medical coverage for the first time to one or more employees who are not enrolled in Transitional Pastor’s Participation or the Congregational Pastors Package or not already offered medical coverage in an existing benefits group.
You will need to provide information about each employee. New medical pricing requests typically take about three to five business days to process and must be completed before submitting your Employer Agreement.
Learn more about requesting Medical Plan pricing.

As you consider your needs, you may find the following resources helpful in your decision and selection process:

The international Season of Creation (September 1–October 4) is a time for followers of Christ around the world to come together in prayer and action for God’s creation. This September, we at EEN are participating in this season by hosting an evening prayer service. We will gather online on Thursday, September 3, at 8 pm EDT to worship, hear joys and concerns from our community, and intercede for them together.
Save Your Spot
Our devotion will be given by EEN Board Member and Executive Director of the American Fisheries Society Jeff Kopaska. Jeff will reflect on this year's Season of Creation theme: “Living Water,” based on Ezekiel 47:1-12. God’s life-giving water flows from the temple. The river grows deeper and deeper, restoring barren land, reviving waters, and sustaining flourishing ecosystems. The prophet's vision invites our response: to be immersed in the living water and experience transformation, then work for the renewal of creation as the Holy Spirit flows from us (John 7:38).

Register now at the link above! Please also use this form to share your prayer requests and praises with EEN's Staff. Our team will be praying for you in the weeks to come.
