Hello Homeowners,
Memorial Day is a very special holiday as we honor the military and first responders who lost their lives in service to our nation and communities. Please join us for a flag ceremony at 8 am on Monday, at the clubhouse flagpoles. After a short and meaningful ceremony, we will go into The Oaks Grille for a complimentary champagne toast. It is an opportunity for each of us to say a few words and raise a glass to give tribute to anyone in our lives that we have lost.
FINAL Call for those who would like to have some fun and raise funds for the Annual Dan Reed Memorial Golf Classic/Tunnel to Towers Foundation. Registration ends today, May 24, but I hear there are still some openings. Please see the article below and register.
Coffee with Carl went well last Friday and Saturday, and we will have more of these and add some new ways for you to participate. Sneak Peek…”Beer with the Board / Cocktails with Carl” is being planned. Keep your eyes open for this special homeowner event.
INSURANCE, now there’s a dry and painful subject. There is some good and not-so-good news. The California Insurance Commissioner and the state court settled with State Farm to continue to operate in the state. State Farm gave California an ultimatum for an “emergency” rate increase of 38%. To keep the California insurance market sustainable, the agreement was made and reduced to a 17.8% rate increase. Had they left the state, it would have created a catastrophic collapse of the California insurance market. The not-so-good news…State Farm is going back to the court to request a second round of rate increases.
The largest impact to the insurance industry is that there are larger, more costly, and more frequent natural disasters. Last year, in the U.S., there were 27 disasters that were individually valued at over 1 Billion Dollars, with the Eaton and Palisades fires estimated at 50 - 95 Billion Dollars. With these devastating fires and double the number of major hurricanes recently, the insurance claims are skyrocketing. Nobody wants to pay more for insurance, but at the same time, it is necessary for the insurers to remain solvent so that they can continue to pay out the claims to the homeowners and business owners who experienced losses.
Unfortunately, insurability is the most critical factor now. I am doing everything I can to demonstrate to our insurance broker and carriers that SDCEA is proactive and has completed many fire risk mitigation projects. We continue to support the efforts of the Fire Safety Committee and the Firewise USA program and are requesting more from CAL FIRE, Emergency Services, County, State, and Federal agencies, and our elected officials to be more proactive around the Estates and Ramona.
Thank you for doing your part in making SDCEA the best it can be. Wishing you a meaningful Memorial Day.
Thank you, Carl Weise, GM
