Chair's Update
by Cindy Banyai
People sometimes think I am wild and crazy. Maybe it's because I love adventure and take opportunities as they arise. Maybe it's because I lived abroad for so many years. Maybe it's because I am a good dancer and like to have fun. What's funny to me about all of these perceptions is that they beguile my typically dogged commitment to process and facts.

Celebrating History, Connecting Community
|

The CDS 50
th
Anniversary Quilt portraying community development was pieced by Mary and Lena Leuci from blocks drawn by conference participants in 2015, 2016 and 2018 and CD members from South Africa. The print that ties the quilt together is South African cotton donated by CDS member Cornel Hart. The quilting group of the St. Ann’s Sodality of the Immaculate Conception Church in Jefferson City, Missouri, hand quilted the finished piece, which is now being bound by Mary’s mom and sister. This awesome commemorative quilt will be on display during the conference and auctioned during the live auction on Tuesday night as a part of the banquet.
Save your dollars! Pool your dollars! Be creative!
This is a beautiful hanging for a public place,
a wall at home, or as a special topper for a bed.
Proceeds from the auction support the CDS Endowment.

Practical Wisdom for a Better World
Organizers of the Conference's Opening Plenary Session are looking for photographs and words that will reflect diverse experiences, perspectives and communities of practice. It's fine to give us just a photo or just words, or both. We welcome all contributions. Your photos and words will help spark conversations, ideas, and inspirations. Qualities such as deep sense of meaning, insight and authenticity are more important than a pretty picture or witty turn of phrase.

Climb Up On Your Soap Box
CDS has always considered input from our members to be a core value. With that in mind, an informal, interactive opportunity for input was initiated about 20 years ago called “The Soap Box.” A solid wooden box/platform known as a soap box is placed in the middle of a ring of CDS members. Then members are encouraged to step up to the soap box and are given 3 minutes to share a concern or issue on their mind. The issue can relate to CDS specifically, community development in general, or even be a particular challenge they are facing in their home community. A couple of “barkers” serve both to encourage the audience to participate but also monitor the speakers and participants so this is a civil exchange where we learn of other member’s concerns. Past Soap Box speeches have brought important suggestions about CDS operations as well as shared new insights about community development from various communities around the world. Join us to share your thoughts at the CDS ”Soap Box” on Tuesday, July 16 from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. in Columbia, Missouri. This will be a fun session, so don’t miss it!
