15-LOVE Excellence Participants Attend Haber Career Excellence Day

In July, three 15-LOVE Excellence participants had the opportunity to attend the Haber Career Excellence Program in Washington, D.C. for three days. The Haber Career Excellence Program  is offered by the USTA Foundation and aims to introduce young people to a diverse range of career paths beyond the sport of tennis.

The program brought NJTL students from across the country and facilitated experiences that exposed them to different industries and professions, including visits to companies and institutions, and opportunities to hear firsthand from professionals.

Essentially, the Haber Career Excellence Program, a crucial component of the USTA Foundation's initiatives, is designed to broaden the horizons of young individuals, spark new goals and inspire new dreams. As highlighted by the USTA Foundation, career readiness is a cornerstone of their mission, and they believe in providing every young person with the chance to explore future opportunities they might not have previously known existed.

Our15-Love participants were Azia Barao, Juan (Camilo) Diaz and Steven Gomez. They were all extremely appreciative of the opportunity to attend as indicated by their written testimonials after the program. Each participant shared their unique experiences and expressed sincere gratitude for the opportunity that was offer by 15-Love and the USTA Foundation.

Azia wrote, “Our trip to Washington D.C., opened both my mind and heart. The beauty of the city is not only skin deep; there is so much more than what meets the eye. We saw this through the powerful exhibits at the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the historic halls of the Capitol, the iconic White House, and the many stunning monuments and memorials that each tell a story of sacrifice, perseverance and hope."

Azia also stated, “One moment that truly stood out to me was visiting the Human Rights Campaign. Being in that space, surrounded by people who work every day to protect equality and justice, was both inspiring and humbling. I realized that change doesn’t just happen – it’s built through the dedication of people who believe in fairness and are willing to stand up for it, even when it’s hard. It reminded me that our voices, no matter how young or how small they seem, can have the power when we choose to use them."

Steven expressed that being in Washington, D.C. was amazing. He stated, “But what made it a trip that wasn't just an excellent experience, it was being able to talk to important people in the world and to learn just how much effort they had to put into their lives to get there. When we had our panel at the White House, being able to listen to the people up front tell their stories was inspiring!”

Camilo’s favorite part of the experience was visiting the monuments and learning about the history of the United States. He especially liked visiting the Washington Monument, the Abraham Lincoln Memorial and the Jefferson Memorial. Camilo wrote, "It was very different seeing it in real life versus what you see in the movies”. Camilo also stated, “The truth is, I am very grateful for having been given the opportunity to go to Washington DC."

It is apparent that each participant was positively affected by the objectives of the Haber Career Excellence Program. This is evident when Camilo wrote.” Seeing the different careers that exist outside of Albany and how they are important, really inspire us to be successful in life”. Additionally, Steven stated. “This trip made me realize as a current 17-year-old that there are many opportunities I could have in life and not only the things I am interested in as of right now. I could end up changing my mind in the near future, who knows what I’ll be doing.” Azia wrote, “I also had the privilege of speaking with people already invested in their career pathways. Many shared that their journey wasn’t originally planned, but once they gave it a try, they began to love what they do. She added, “I learned that life could sway you in unexpected directions, and sometimes the best thing you can do is follow it to see where you truly belong. It may take time, but once you get there, every bit of hard work will have been worth it."

Finally, in addition to the great memories that were created and lessons learned, the participants spoke about the friendships that were made. Steven expressed how much he enjoyed meeting new friends and the strong desire to participate in future programs. Finally, Azia wrote, “The best part of all was the friendships I developed – bonds that I know will last beyond this trip – and the memories I will cherish forever."

Overall, the participants thanked the USTA Foundation, 15-LOVE, the mentors, and everyone who made this trip possible. One participant wrote, “Thank you for investing in us. You have shown me that opportunity, when met with curiosity and determination, can open doors to places we never imagined. This trip has inspired me to keep learning, keep exploring and keep believing that my place in the world is out there, waiting for me."

15-LOVE Excellence Jenifer Lalman Goes to Florida for College Bootcamp

In July 2025, the USTA Foundation hosted the annual College Bootcamp, for scholarship recipients in Orlando to prepare them for the next phase of their academic careers. The Bootcamp offers workshops for scholarship recipients, in the area of college tennis Exposure  exclusively taught by head college coaches, which provides valuable training for players aiming for college tennis.

Jennifer, was awarded the USTA Foundation McNeely Hurley College Scholarship for high school seniors who demonstrate exceptional leadership, good academic achievement and tennis skills. Jennifer shared her experience in writing. She wrote, “I had the incredible opportunity to participate in the 2025 USTA Foundation College Bootcamp from July 17 to July 20 in Orlando, Florida. I learned so much about myself, while learning the importance of communicating clearly and concisely. I also learned about how to be successful in college and career. During the Bootcamp, I made connections with inspiring people in their fields and other participants. The many workshops included a speaker from TD Bank, who taught us about building credit. All participants were given the opportunity to take professional headshots in order to create a LinkedIn account, which was then connected to everyone in the room.

On the last day we were introduced to the USTAF Internship, and Evan Smith wrapped up with a session on leadership—how our values right now will change in the future, but what’s important is how we use them to guide us to what we want to accomplish in life.

I am extremely grateful for this opportunity and will use what I learned in life and remember the experiences I had. I would like to thank the USTAF staff for giving me this experience, sharing your incredible knowledge, and, of course, choosing me to be a recipient of a USTAF Scholarship. ď»żOverall, I increased my self-confidence, while having a fun time, such as our visit to Universal Studios”.
