Insure Your Future 2024

What did last year's IYF interns have to say about the program?

The Insure Your Future Program (IYF) is the first-of-its-kind in the nation that helps freshman and sophomore students, from any background, discover the insurance industry and open their eyes to the many opportunities and roles available. The 2024 cohort has grown by 24% to 84 students (34 from UI). New this year are student mentors from last year's program who provide insight and advice to this year's cohort. The leadership sessions are an amazing aspect of this experience where the students have the opportunity to meet industry execs, interact with other interns, and hear about other interns' experiences at their companies. If your company is not involved in this, you are missing out. Reach out to Michael Gould at IEDA and learn more before the 2025 internship recruiting season begins this September.

After surveying last year's initial IYF class:

  • Over 90% of participants said the program assisted them in understanding the direction of their career
  • 80% of participants returned to the insurance industry or financial services this summer
  • 93% of participants fulfilled the requirement of attending 3 to 4 leadership sessions
  • 71% of participants submitted 3-5 minute scholarship video applications reflecting on their internship experience
  • 80% of participants said they have discussed the program with classmates, professors, career services professionals, and/or friends

Leadership Session 1 invited this year's interns to hear about making the most of their IYF experience from last year's participants, as well as an inspiring presentation from Iowa Insurance Commissioner, Doug Ommen, on "finding your why." This first leadership session held at Sammons Financial in West Des Moines gave students the opportunity to hear from industry leaders while connecting with their peers outside of their individual internship offices.

Leadership Session 2 held at TrueNorth in Cedar Rapids, inspired this year's IYF interns to be prepared to take the lead in an ever-evolving industry. With a young leader industry panel who spoke on building your leadership resume, HR tips on presenting your best self during the interview process, and a Q&A with TrueNorth CEO Jason Smith, these relevant leadership activities are helping students make the most of their internship experiences while building lasting connections with the best the industry.

Thank you to University of Iowa Dean Amy Kristof-Brown, Associate Dean Charles Keene, and IEDA's Michael Gould for their continued support of this amazing program.

What classes do you teach? Principles of RMI, Enterprise Risk Management

What made you want to come back to teach at the Vaughan Institute? As a graduate of the Risk Management and Insurance program at Tippie, I wanted to give back to the community. I'm passionate about the insurance industry and wanted to help inspire and develop the next generation of risk management and insurance leaders.

What was your favorite thing about the Vaughan Institute as a student? From the student perspective, the opportunities the Vaughan Institute presented by bringing in companies to classes and guest speaking events, and activities like the golf outing that allowed me to be able to meet new people in the industry and ask questions in a way that's different from a lot of other programs. From the early stages of my career, I was able to meet lots of different people and executives to make the most of my college experience.

What is your favorite thing about the Vaughan Institute as an instructor? Aside from the great growth we've had since establishing the major, the ability of the program to get more people involved and interested in a growing industry has been super rewarding. Being able to develop and offer new classes and experiences pertaining to RMI has been great; it helps get people excited about coming into insurance and shows that the industry is more than just selling policies.

What's one thing you would like RMI students to know?

Historically, the insurance industry has generally had a poor reputation for being older and lacking innovation. However, during my time in the industry it's been anything but that. I've seen firsthand the industry work hard to focus on innovation, develop systems, and use technology to better represent their policy holders. There's ample space for newcomers in the industry.

What’s your favorite thing about the Vaughan Institute? I would have to say that my favorite thing about the Vaughan Institute is the strong foundation of knowledge about the industry and the growing network with industry professionals that I have been able to create!

Why did you join GIS? I held an internship with an insurance company before joining GIS my Sophomore year and after hearing that a Risk Management and Insurance fraternity existed at Iowa, I was hooked because of all the perks that being around the insurance industry has to offer!

What do you hope to get out of your GIS leadership experience this year? For my term as the President of GIS, I hope to develop my communication skills, confidence in leading others, and improve my strategic planning skills that this position allows me to work on!

Why would you recommend other students join GIS? I would recommend other students to join GIS because it gives you a great opportunity to become the “cream of the crop” students who get to be in front of the top employers in the industry, gain knowledge about what the industry has to offer, and create lasting connections with peers at our many socials and pro-trips we have.
