For Helen Miller
The First Six Months
The end of June marks six months since I took that first, tentative leap of faith and created the inaugural issue of Willi Miller’s Arts Blast. With every issue since then, I ask myself if I’m still having fun, still learning, still filling a need, still growing and tweaking and discovering and sharing, and the answer is always an unqualified Yes! (Insert fist pump here.)

Introducing readers at the northern end of the Arts Blast coverage area to what’s happening to their south, and showing readers in the southern part what adventures are within an easy drive north has been one of my goals, and it’s happening. Along the way, I’m learning about new events, meeting new people, and catching up with old friends.

For example: Watch for a story about Kerry Rocks soon. I came across her name while researching another Arts Blast feature and found her on Facebook. Kerry was a Young Musicians Spotlight winner when I produced the show for WQCS many years ago, a student at Martin County High School, she reminded me. She’s now 33 (!) years old and has a successful career in music and teaching.

Thank you to all who have offered encouragement, shared Arts Blast with friends and colleagues, included a link in your own newsletters, and jumped in with advertising and sponsorship. It isn’t possible to express how much you’ve inspired and boosted me. On to the next six months and a successful season after a restful summer.
A Celebration of Love at the House of Refuge
You're going to have to hustle to catch this one.

On March 10th, 1914, John Taylor married Sarah Josephine Kitching. It was also both of their birthdays! They honeymooned at the House of Refuge which was celebrating a birthday of its own, having opened on March 10th, 1876.

The stunning handmade gown worn by Sarah was passed down to her daughter, Elizabeth, who wore it on her wedding day, March 10th, 1939. The entire ensemble was passed down to Kitching heirs and worn in a total of six weddings spanning 76 years! It was last worn by Joy Paradise Tomei on December 15, 1990. Josephine Paradise donated the gown and all that went with it to the Historical Society of Martin County in 2006.
The entire, original Kitching Family Wedding Gown ensemble, plus four more over-the-top vintage wedding gowns from HSMC's permanent collection, are on display in the rooms at the House of Refuge Museum  though June 30th!  A must-see for the bride-to-be and for those of us who have been brides for many years!

Spotlight on Artist Jennifer Chaparro
I’ve always been intrigued and I guess puzzled by the making of street art. Why would anyone work so hard out in the hot sun creating a work of art that, by definition, is meant to be temporary. Happily, the explanation Hobe Sound resident and street artist Jennifer Chaparro gave actually made sense to me! She said, “It is a performance art, similar to ice sculpture or sand sculpture. It is what makes it special, that you need to be ‘in the moment’ to appreciate it.” She compared it to going to a concert and listening to music. “You leave with an experience!”
Chaparro has been an artist in a variety of mediums most of her life but street art didn’t grab her until she went to a street painting festival in Lake Worth in 1999. Then, with a graphic design background and her business sense, she figured out how to move from the traditional 2D street paintings to the increasingly popular 3D interactive form to develop her business. Her first paying street art project was in Naples, Fla., in 2007, for the opening of a real estate project. Fort Lauderdale’s Hardrock Casino was the scene of her first paid 3D piece, a car commissioned for the opening of a parking garage. She said, “I realized the 3D art was what big companies were paying artists to do at events, so I decided to learn how to do the 3D.”
Chaparro called on her two daughters to work with her on projects, including the painting pictured here, Sisters. That one was a turning point for Chaparro. “I just loved it for the colors, and the expressive faces. We did such a good job on it, that I felt I was ready to do this professionally. I felt like I had finally mastered the medium. Faces are very difficult for many, but I love doing them.”

Both of her daughters carried art over into their careers. One is an architect and the other an artist with a studio in Chicago. “I truly believe the experience of chalking together with them when they were younger was important to their choices to move into artistic careers,” Chaparro said.
The artist has a full-time day job as director of communications for Lighthouse ArtCenter in Tequesta. In addition to street art, Chaparro’s portfolio holds samples of her other work: pastel portraits, watercolor, large scale murals, hand-lettered signs, and graphics. “I do a little bit of everything,” she said. “In college at UCLA, I was fortunate to be able to experiment with many different mediums, including clothing, fiber, ceramics, landscape design, furniture design, etc. I love the challenge of new materials, and seeing how far I can push it.”

Vegas Fun for Riverside Children's Theatre
Riverside Theatre fans struck it rich four years ago when someone came up with an idea that really put the fun in fundraising for Riverside Children’s Theatre. Vegas Nights, coming in July, has genuine casino games to play but bets are made only with funny money. Guests have all the thrill of playing blackjack, craps, and roulette, and pulling the handle on one-armed bandits without gambling on losing their money. At the end of the evening, winnings are cashed in for great prizes.

Several events are held during the year to raise funds for Riverside Theatre programs, each with a specific purpose. Jon Moses, managing director and COO of Riverside Theatre, said, “Funds support on campus classes and shows, off campus programs, discount tuition programs, discount and free ticket programs, and free events.” Vegas Nights revenue specifically targets RCT’s discount tuition program. It takes $50,000 each year to fully fund the applications received, Moses said. About $10,000 of that is brought in through Vegas Nights.
Students who apply for tuition assistance range in age from 6 to 17, and there are around 120 applications each year. Tuition for classes and camps at RCT runs from $120 to $900, and 25 percent of the participants are on scholarship. Once approved, Moses said, “their discount can be applied to all classes taken within that specified season.” Parents have an obligation to RCT, he added. “Volunteer hours are required upon accepting and using a scholarship.”

Riverside has two main fundraisers for Education — The Festival of Trees and Vegas Nights. The Festival of Trees is the largest and “most crucial to the everyday operation of Education and all of its outreach programs,” Moses said.
“Both fundraisers, aside from supporting everyday costs, enables Riverside to provide up to $180,000 worth of free outreach programs and services to the schools, students, and families each year.” Included in community outreach are the Riverside Theatre For KIDS Touring Shows program and field trips to Riverside Theatre shows.

The Vegas Nights casino activity is in the lobby, with no ticket required. In the Black Box theatre, the Comedy Zone Experience, Howl at the Moon, and Live in the Loop will go on as usual Fridays and Saturdays in August.

NOTE: The authentic casino gaming tables are provided for entertainment purposes only. All donations and proceeds will benefit Riverside Theatre for KIDS discount tuition program. Must be 18 years or older to play. Check the website for details on rules and prizes.
Tickets for Comedy Zone are $12 - $18. Tickets for Howl at the Moon are $12 - $22. Live in the Loop performances are always FREE.

Purchase chips to play the casino games. For $10 US dollars, receive $20 worth of casino chips. For $20 US dollars, receive $50 worth of casino chips.

For additional information or to purchase tickets, call the Riverside Theatre Box Office at 772-231-6990 or online at www.riversidetheatre.com .

Weekends at Riverside Theatre are all about fun but there are some firm rules:
No pets allowed for our outdoor concerts or evening events.
Sorry, we NEVER allow ANY off-premise beverages, including water, or filled or non-clear beverage containers, on our campus. We have everything you may need in regards to beverages. Purchasing refreshments helps make these free concerts possible.
Regulations concerning alcohol are established by the State of Florida, not by the Theatre. Any alcohol, other than Riverside Theatre, is STRICTLY PROHIBITED on the premises. Any guests found in violation will be asked to leave immediately.
Have Piano Will Duel
The second annual Have Piano, Will Duel project, sponsored by Vero Vino Wine and Food Festival, will bring local jazz students together for a music intensive workshop with Jacob Craig, Director of Music and Arts at First Presbyterian Church of Vero Beach, June 29. The group will present a concert that evening at Unity Spiritual Center of Vero Beach, 950 43rd Ave., at 6 p.m.

Mike Block's Vero Beach International String Festival
He’s baaack! Or at least he will be soon. Mike Block and his merry band of award-winning musicians will be in Vero Beach for the tenth year of his annual string camp early in July and, as always, he has treats in store for the Treasure Coast audience.

The Vero Beach International Music Festival, with three performances, is scheduled for July10-13 at First Presbyterian Church in McAfee Hall. July 10 and12 at 7:30 p.m., the Main Stage performances will feature “Americana, Bluegrass, Celtic, Folk, Jazz, Pop, Rock, Indian, and more from the Faculty of Mike Block String Camp, as well as advanced student groups,” Block said.
The final show, July 13, is at 3 p.m. Block calls it the Culminating Concert & Barn Dance. This one showcases the Mike Block String Camp participants, including international students and musicians from local schools.

Among the professional musicians are several Grammy Award winners and nominees: Darol Anger - Grammy Nominated Folk and Jazz Violinist; Kimber Ludiker - Grammy Nominated Fiddler and and Grand Master Fiddling Champion; Mike Block - Grammy Award-Winning Multi-Style Cellist and Singer; and Zach Brock - Grammy Award-Winning Jazz Violinist. Also on the roster are a folk cellist, a Celtic fiddler, a Carnatic (South Indian classical) violinist; an old-time fiddler; an R&R and jazz violinist; a bluegrass mandolinist; and others.
The concerts are free but donations will be received with thanks to benefit the String Camp scholarship fund. Get more information at www.VeroBeachInternationalMusicFestival.com . Block and South African guitarist Derek Gripper have recently released an album of songs written or inspired by African singers, Saturday Morning in Boston. Block is online at www.MikeBlockMusic.com and on Facebook, www.facebook.com/BlockCello .
Big Plans for Maltz & In the Heights
The Maltz Jupiter Theatre is looking for an exciting future in three acts, but this time it isn’t on stage. The theatre is expanding, with plans to make improvements to production facilities that will make it possible to book pre-Broadway shows and national tours. When the dust settles at the end of the multi-year project, the stage will be 10 feet deeper and six feet wider on either side, and there will be a third-floor rehearsal studio, giving residents the opportunity to see actors at work.
Andrew Kato, the Theatre’s producing artistic director and chief executive, said the expansion will expand educational opportunities, as well. “The Theatre’s popular Goldner Conservatory of Performing Arts will double in size, allowing students the opportunity to receive a high-quality, dynamic arts education in state-of-the-art facilities." A multi-purpose second space will open up a whole new chapter for the theatre, with opportunities to program a film series, more intimate plays and musicals, museum exhibits, and other unique presentations.
All of those elements are in Act II of the expansion plans. Act I, scheduled to be completed before the opening of the 2019/20 season, will see improvements on the campus: Parking will increase by 30-40 spaces, landscaping will enhance the theatre’s overall appearance, and power will be brought to the building in preparation for the second phase. The work also will include two brand new state-of-the-art marquees and an additional curb cut to allow for easier Conservatory student drop off and pickup.
This weekend, audiences can see the show that introduced Hamilton: An American Musical ’s composer and lyricist, Lin-Manuel Miranda, to theatre goers, In the Heights . Students in the Maltz Jupiter Theatre Goldner Conservatory of Performing Arts’ three-week Senior Conservatory summer camp, 62 in number, will present the 2008 award-winning musical that takes place in “the vibrant Cuban, Dominican and Puerto Rican neighborhood of Manhattan's Washington Heights and tells the universal story of bodega owner Usnavi, who dreams of saving enough money to return to his home country, the Dominican Republic. Meanwhile, his neighbors face the challenge of sustaining their tight-knit community.” Director Ricky Nahas said, “ In The Heights is a driving Broadway hit filled with fresh Latin dancing, an unforgettable score and pure uninhibited joy. I’d like to encourage everyone to come see our area’s talented local students perform in this wonderful musical.” Photo by Jason Nuttle.

Showtimes for the Conservatory’s upcoming production of In The Heights are 7:30 p.m. on Friday, June 28, and Saturday, June 29. Tickets are $25 for adults; $20 for children. For tickets, call the Theatre’s box office at (561) 575-2223 or visit www.jupitertheatre.org .
From Eastminster Presbyterian Church:
On the 4th of July, at 7:30 p.m., the Melbourne Municipal Band and Festival Chorus will join for God Bless the USA: A Salute to America , celebrating our nation’s heritage through song. This annual concert will be reminiscent of an old-fashion town 4th, with patriotic songs to sing along with, and ice cream for everyone before and after the concert. What's a little different from concerts of old will be the setting. It's inside the air-conditioned sanctuary of Eastminster Presbyterian Church, 106 N. Riverside Dr., Indialantic.

Veterans and their families will be asked to stand and be recognized when the military anthem for their branch of the service is played. Melbourne Municipal Band Conductor Staci Rosbury will lead the musical tribute to America, along with Festival Chorus Conductor, David Fleenor and Guest Conductor, Beth Green. Jill McCall, coordinator of the event, said, "After the concert, folks are welcome to spread a blanket on the church lawn, have some ice cream and watch the Front Street fireworks."

For more information about God Bless the USA: A Salute to America , call 321-723-8371 or visit www.EPCfl.org . More information about the Melbourne Municipal Band is available on their website, www.MMband.net .

Road Trip! to Key West's Butterfly Garden
With more readers of Arts Blast joining almost every day, I thought a reminder was in order: The Road Trip segment is often an armchair road trip for this writer. When I moved to Florida in 1990, I found so many places I wanted to see but, as often happens, life got in the way. This will have to do for me but I hope you will go exploring and report back with Road Trips to share.

I always thought the butterfly pavilion at Cypress Gardens was a magical place, so when I discovered The Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory online, I had to share.
"Walk through a magical and inviting environment filled with hundreds of the most beautiful winged creatures in nature. During your breathtaking journey you will experience an impressive collection of flowering plants, colorful birds, cascading waterfalls and trees that set the stage for the 'flowers of the sky.'"

There's a learning center, where youngsters and grownups can follow along on the life cycle of Monarch butterflies, watching caterpillars work toward their future form.
Conservatory marketing people have had fun naming activities. There's Flamingle, pre-arranged personal time with flamingos Rhett and Scarlett. Frequent Flutter passes are available for those planning return visits. Wings of Flight is the butterfly gallery, with original art by Sam Trophia.

According to the website, the facility is enclosed and wheelchair accessible. Strollers and pets are welcome in the gift shop and gallery but not in the conservatory. " Our admission attendant is always available to watch any well-behaved pets.
