NEXT CCGGA OPEN HOUSE

SATURDAY APRIL 8, 2023*

*Tentative date pending Board Approval

Message from our Administrative Director

The 19th Annual Open House, after a two year hiatus, finally took place in April . In spite of post Covid related complications and rising fuel prices the event proved to be quite a success. This year we had nine member nurseries open to the public - a new record! As a result we are able to fund 7 scholarships to local college bound students.  Several students are now in the process of completing their fall registration, submitting proof of enrollment and will soon be receiving their scholarship award checks in the mail. Thank you again to all who gave their time and materials to make our annual fundraising event possible!

We are also welcoming Nipomo Native Seeds as our newest grower member and Hortica as a returning associate member - welcome aboard.

Below are some photos of the Open House along with a few photos of Nipomo High School  scholarship award presentations made by board members last month.

Wishing you all a great summer!

Adopt A Road Program

The CCGGA continues to participate in San Luis Obispo County's Adopt A Road program in spite of the pandemic impacts to the growers.

Several nurseries maintain Mesa Road, Zenon Way and Willow Roads in the Nipomo / Arroyo Grande mesa areas in southern San Luis Obispo County. Here is just one example of feedback from County Engineering:

Hi Dan,

Thank you for the email update. I appreciate it. I will add this to my ongoing monthly bag count.

Please express my gratitude to Ulf and the crew. I appreciate their enthusiasm and genuine dedication to the program.

I hope all is well with you.

Respectfully,

CCGGA Beginnings

Our first organized meeting was held in April of 1990. I don’t recall exactly where it was held, but we had Bob Lilley, then Assistant Ag Commissioner was there to talk about land use plans and proposed county greenhouse zoning and buffer zone issues. Also, Rick Landon, Deputy Ag Commissioner spoke on the new pesticide use and reporting regulations that we all are so familiar with now.

During the first year we started having regular Steering Committee meetings at different lunch spots in Nipomo. Our primary goal was to form a consensus of opinions and standards so we could speak with one voice when addressing land use planning issues.

In August, we got together with the local chapter of the California Association of Nurserymen to sponsor an Integrated Pest Management seminar at the Women’s Club building in Arroyo Grande. We brought Michael Parella and his staff down from UC Davis for a daylong event. I remember we paid their travel costs and put them up at the Kon Tiki Inn in Pismo Beach. CARR pitched in also... I think they paid for a bar-b-que lunch. Needless to say, Diane (West Covina nursery) and I were relieved when we figured out that we had broken even on the event...whew!

The CCGGA held a Covid-19 Vaccination Clinic at Altman Plants in Nipomo on a rainy day on December.

Thank you to SLO County Health for sending out your outstanding Mobil clinic crew and to Altman Plants for providing the site!

CCGGA 19th Annual Open House & Scholarship Fundraiser was held on April 8, 2022.

In spite of post Covid complications and rising gas prices, attendance was surprisingly steady at the Education Center  @ Nipomo High School.

Thanks to the nine member nurseries that were open to the public, all the volunteers and generous associate members, we are able to provide scholarships again this year.
