Project Overview
The City of Miami Beach receives potable water from the mainland via four transmission mains. Water enters San Marco Island via parallel mains that run along the north and south overhangs of the bridges from the Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (MDWASD).
The Venetian Causeway's water main aerial crossings are in poor condition, ranking first on the prioritized list of high criticality assets in the Water and Sewer Renewal and Replacement Report.
What's Happening
This project will be completed in four stages. The contractor (David Mancini and Sons, Inc.) will install a fence on Belle Isle for the designated staging area on Friday, November 18, 2022 and will begin a directional drill to install a new water main between Rivo Alto and Belle Island on Monday, December 5, 2022.
Timeline
The contractor will begin on Monday, December 5, 2022. Work will be performed Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Below is a tentative schedule for each phase:
-
Phase I: 12/5/22 - 1/24/23
-
Phase II: 1/25/23 - 3/20/23
-
Phase III: 3/21/23 - 5/26/23
-
Phase IV: 5/27/23 - 8/24/23
The entire project is expected to be completed by December 2023. This schedule may change due to weather or unforeseen circumstances.
What to Expect
- Due to the closure of Venetian Way, residents will notice an increase in traffic through their neighborhoods.
- The middle block of Venetian Way will be closed for construction, and traffic will be routed north and south through residential streets.
- Commuters to and from Miami Beach will face delays as the Venetian Causeway will be restricted to local traffic only during construction; commuters who do not live on the Venetian Islands will have to take alternate routes.
- Residents will face narrow and/or single-lane traffic on the Venetian Way bridge during pullback operations, when the pipe is staged and fused. At the time of work, there will be moderate noise impacts outside of normal working hours.
