Venetian Causeway Water and Sewer Main Replacement

Project Start Date: Wednesday, December 7, 2022

This message is a reminder that the Venetian Causeway Water and Sewer Main Replacement Project will begin on Wednesday, December 7, 2022.

Overview

The City of Miami Beach receives its drinking water from the mainland via four transmission mains. Water enters San Marco Island via parallel water mains that run north and south of the Venetian bridges from the Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (MDWASD). This project will replace a segment of the water mains in four phases. These mains are in poor condition, and the city is replacing both the water and sewer mains on the Venetian Causeway between Belle Isle and Rivo Alto.

What's Happening

The Venetian Causeway Water and Sewer Main Replacement project will replace the old main and bridge crossing with new pipes that will be installed underground. Work will be completed by the contractor David Mancini and Sons, Inc.

Timeline

This project is scheduled to start on Wednesday, December 7, 2022. Work will be performed Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Below is a tentative schedule for each phase:

  • Phase I: December 2022 - January 2023
  • Phase II: January 2023 - March 2023
  • Phase III: March 2023 - May 2023
  • Phase IV: May 2023 - August 2023

The project is expected to be completed by the fall of 2023. This schedule may change due to weather or unforeseen circumstances.

Traffic Impacts

Traffic operations will be assisted by off-duty police officers and flaggers from the contractor. This will allow work to continue while attempting to minimize disruption to residents. Below is a breakdown of the upcoming traffic changes related to phase I. Please click here to view the project's full traffic plan.

Phase I – Traffic Changes for December 2022 - January 2023

The following lanes will be closed during Phase I:

  • Eastbound lanes and one westbound turning lane on Venetian Way between E & W Rivo Alto.
  • The eastbound lanes adjacent to Belle Isle Park will be closed, as well as one eastbound turning lane.
  • Sections of the bike lane may be closed and incorporated into the travel lane.
  • Sections of the sidewalk may be closed and a pedestrian detour will be in place.

  • There may be construction noise due to drilling equipment.
  • Lane closures on both Belle Isle and Rivo Alto will require traffic to temporarily be routed north and south along residential streets.
  • Commuters to and from Miami Beach will face delays on the Venetian Causeway due to detours.
  • Residents will face narrow and/or single-lane traffic on the Venetian Way bridge during pullback operations, when the pipe is staged and fused.
  • There may be moderate noise impacts outside of normal working hours.
  • A staging area will be installed on the northeastern side of Belle Isle Park.
  • One lane of the Venetian Causeway will be open at all times.
  • Emergency vehicles will have access to the islands at all times.
