The Modernistics

Join us every Wednesday in May for a virtual show performed by a fabulous group, "The Modernistics". Like last month's "Jazz at the Ventress," a new song and dance video will be posted on our Facebook page each week. (Some of you may remember when they performed live at the Ventress in April 2017, funded in part by the Friends of the Ventress Library.) The group performs upbeat shows of music and dance from the Great American Songbook, with crowd-pleasing favorites by Duke Ellington, Cole Porter, Harold Arlen, Irving Berlin, Dorothy Fields, and other master tunesmiths. The videos will remain posted on Facebook for you to come back and watch again and again! Enjoy!
The Great Courses

"How to Grow Anything: Your Best Garden and Landscape in 6 Lessons!" is this week's "Great Course of the Week" selection. In this clear and useful guide to growing, taught by award-winning horticulturalist Professor Melinda Myers, students will learn the fundamental rules of gardening. Myers is a horticulturist, certified arborist, gardening expert, television/radio host, columnist, and author with more than 30 years of horticulture experience. Click Here! to check out this course and other great offerings from "The Great Courses".
Friday Food Fest: Authentic Spanish Gazpacho

Last week on "Friday Food Fest", we featured this amazing Spanish Gazpacho soup! This recipe was discovered by Librarian Chris Woods when the VML Classic Book Group read Don Quixote and the group dined on a potluck of Spanish food. This gazpacho recipe is bursting with flavor and has wonderful creaminess; although no cream is used. Click Here! to view this delicious recipe.
Children's Update
  • Virtual Field Trips: New! Join us as we take a virtual field trip every Wednesday on Facebook! With the help of Google Places - Arts & Culture you can virtually tour museums and historical sites all around the world. See the grounds, view the exhibits, in some cases even participate in interactive programming!

  • Goodreads: The Ventress Children's Room is now on Goodreads! Check our bookshelf tags for some reading recommendations, including digital reads available on Hoopla, Libby, and Overdrive.
Teen Update
  • YA Picks: We recommend Night Music by Jenn Marie Thorne if you want to escape to a NYC summer romance – I got serious E.L. Konigsburg vibes on this one! If you’re feeling more of a fantasy vibe with an epic cast of characters, try There Will Come a Darkness by Katy Rose Pool - the worldbuilding is inspired by ancient Mediterranean history, so it will be extra fun for history buffs. On that note, if you’re looking for something shorter (and not part of a series), then Bull by David Elliott, a verse retelling of Theseus and the minotaur, is another great (and quick!) pick. Check out our Virtual Teen Zone for more great books, as well as our TikTok for a new book talk every Tuesday.

  • Teens Top Ten: We are also so excited about this year’s Teens’ Top Ten finalists! Watch this video to learn about all 25 books. Read as many titles as you can – voting is open to readers ages twelve to eighteen and will open online between August 15 - October 12 (so stay tuned). Check them out online here.
