Multiply

John said to him, “Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he was not following us.” But Jesus said, “Do not stop him, for no one who does a mighty work in my name will be able soon afterward to speak evil of me. For the one who is not against us is for us. For truly, I say to you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ will by no means lose his reward.

 Mark 9:38-41

One of the most critical elements of ministry is the need to multiply. I just preached this text this past Sunday. It deals with a number of very interesting issues when it comes to ministry, especially related to the church in America. That being said, what I find interesting here is the tension between the disciples and Jesus related to someone else doing a ministry that was very similar to their ministry but not their ministry.

If anyone felt they had the authoritative right to determine who does this kind of ministry and how it needs to be done, it would have been the disciples. After all, Jesus had called them, trained them, and sent them out to do this very thing. Read More

The $15-Dollar Millionaire

One of my nephews turns 22 this weekend. While raised in Oregon he moved to Wisconsin late last summer to get his first job after college and to get some new life experience (winter). He’s stayed with us for six or eight weeks at a time the past three summers so a longer, six or eight months extended stay seemed the next natural step to me. It’s his first time moving out from under the roof of his mom and two younger brothers. I call it a soft launch.

Even though he’ll likely move back in with them it’s been an important move for him. Not to mention, we’ve enjoyed having him in our home for a few months. Read More
