Last week was a busy week in recovery news. While the opioid and substance use disorder epidemic continues to get a hold of Vermonters, Valley Vista management, with support of the state, is moving quickly to open its Vergennes facility. Meanwhile, virtually at the same time, a Valley Vista partner was providing insight on sports-related addiction.
A week ago Wednesday, Valley Vista VP of Clinical Services & COO, Rick DiStefano joined Barbara Cimaglio, VT Deputy Health Commissioner, and Jeff Messina, Former Board President of Maple Leaf Farm on
VPR's Vermont Edition
provided insight on the closing of Maple Leaf Farm and an update on how the state is dealing with the closure and resulting shortage of inpatient treatment beds. Rick shared his thoughts on the closing of one of Vermont's premiere treatment facilities while providing an update on the opening of Valley Vista Vergennes. He reported an anticipated opening date slated for the week of April 17th.
In anticipation of the opening, an open house for the Vergennes community was held the following Thursday evening where the newly elected Mayor, other community leaders and state officials were on hand to discuss what is seen as a positive impact on the community.
Also making news was Valley Vista outpatient treatment partner, Bradford Psychiatric Associates, LLC, (BPA). The treatment center's new Medical Director provided valuable insight on the link between addiction and sports-related injuries. The
with Fred Hesse, MD, shed light on the propensity of overprescribing pain killers and a young athlete's vulnerability to addiction given their still growing bodies and minds, and the desire to not let their team and friends down.
There are many stakeholders around the state working hard to fight the substance misuse epidemic and both Valley Vista and its recovery-focused partner, BPA, are honored to be a part of the Vermont community providing options for those in need of inpatient or outpatient treatment for substance use disorder.
Enjoy your day and the weekend that lies ahead!
