Hello all.
I hope everyone has been enjoying the winter thus far, and have been able to enjoy it however you prefer! I for one am excited for the elusive sunny days we have been having while there is still great snow in the mountains!
This is an exciting time to be an Engineer in the State of Vermont! This past month we celebrated Engineers Week, culminating in the annual Banquet where we honored and celebrated some excellent engineers and students from around the state. We also released our Vermont State Infrastructure Report Card! If you have not seen it yet, be sure to check it out. Vermont Engineers have worked hard the last few months gathering data and authoring sections to compile the 2023 report card. I also had the honor to attend the ASCE legislative Fly-In in Washington D.C. with fellow VT ASCE members where we met with congressional staff to discuss infrastructure funding opportunities.
We have a few upcoming events, some new announcements, and a lot of great info in this newsletter. The Vermont ASCE board is also looking for new board members. We have a few open positions and are always open to interested folks to join in any capacity, so feel free to contact me! More details on open positions below.
As always, if anyone has any questions about ASCE, would like to become more involved, or would just like to connect, please feel free to reach out!
Thank you,
Jordan Duffy

The Green Circle sponsorship level features your company logo on the VT ASCE website for the 2023 calendar year and includes recognition at the annual Ski Day. The Blue Square sponsorship level also features your company logo on the VT ASCE monthly newsletter for the 2023 calendar year. 2023 ASCE Legislature Fly-in in Washington DC
Jordan Duffy (VT ASCE chapter president), Jessica Louisos (VT ASCE Government Relations Chair), and Stephanie Wyman (ASCE Region 1 Governor) attended the 2023 ASCE Legislative Fly-in in Washington DC. The event brought together ASCE members from across the country to meet with their respective legislative staff to discuss bills and acts that will impact infrastructure funding. The Vermont ASCE team met with offices for Senator Peter Welch, Senator Bernie Sanders, and Representative Becca Balint to discuss key issues related to infrastructure in Vermont, and how recent funding, such as the 2022 bipartisan infrastructure bill, has been implemented and what further funding and policy needs the state has. Legislative staff in D.C. rely on the ASCE organization as sources of professional knowledge on topics such as infrastructure. It was an honor to be representing our great state of Vermont!

MIT Survey on Structural Engineering
We are researchers from MIT’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering conducting a survey on embodied carbon and computational tools, such as parametric design and optimization, in building design. The responses will be used to understand how to make academic research more relevant to structural engineering practice.
If you are a structural engineer with experience in building design, we would greatly appreciate your participation in this study, regardless of your level of expertise in either embodied carbon or computational tools.
The survey is expected to take 20-30 minutes and primarily consists of multiple-choice questions and some free-text responses. Three case studies on computational tools in structural engineering will be presented, which offer an opportunity for you to learn about cutting-edge technologies being developed in your field. In addition, participating in this survey is an opportunity for you to actively inform future research directions.
The consent form and survey can be accessed here or via the QR code below. Please submit your responses by Monday, March 20th. Identifying information will be kept separate from your responses to ensure confidentiality.
Thank you!
Maggie Smith

Vermont PE Board Immediate and Future Vacancies
The Vermont Board of Professional Engineering, within the Office of Professional Regulation, has a current vacancy for a member licensed as an Electrical PE in Vermont. In addition, a vacancy for a member licensed as a Structural PE in Vermont will exist as of December 31, 2023. If your Vermont PE stamp says “Electrical” or “Structural” on it, you would likely be eligible.
The Board is responsible for overseeing the licensure of engineers (e.g., review/approval of applications), disciplinary matters related to licensed engineers, and other activities under Vermont statutes and rules. Members are appointed by the Governor for fixed terms of service. The Board meets the first Thursday morning of every other month, starting February of each year. Meetings are currently held virtually using remote-meeting software; when in-person meetings were held prior to COVID-19 (and possibly again in the future), they have been in Montpelier.
