Geo-Institute Meeting at Norwich University - October 18th
On October 18, 2021 we held our annual Geo-Institute meeting in-person at Norwich University. The afternoon began with a demonstration of a cone penetration test performed by New England Boring Contractors and Vertek. There were approximately 20 students in attendance from Norwich University and the University of Vermont. Thank you, Adam Sevi and Shawn Kelley, for organizing such a great demonstration!
The second event of the afternoon was the Norwich University plaque dedication for becoming an ASCE National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark. John Stevens did a wonderful job planning the event with speakers from Norwich University and VT ASCE.
The evening ended with a dinner and technical presentation where speaker Ryan Langlois from ARA/Vertek discussed the Integrated Products Division and focused on Cone Penetration Technology and how it can be used to serve both Commercial and Governmental partners.
Plaque Unveiled at Norwich University
The Vermont Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) presented a plaque to Norwich University. The plaque recognizes Norwich as the first private institution to teach Civil Engineering (CE) in the US. The ceremony was attended by VT ASCE members, Norwich Civil Engineering faculty and students. Recognition was a 3-year quest spearheaded by John Stevens, retired CE faculty member. Prof. Gary Lord told about previous attempts to achieve this recognition. Prof. Tara Kulkarni, the current chair of the Civil & Environmental Engineering and Construction Management Department, spoke of the honor this recognition brings Norwich. Stephanie Wyman, current President of the VT Section of ASCE, recounted the importance of Norwich to Civil Engineering Education. Norwich has continuously taught CE courses for 200 years and has been accredited by the Engineering Council on Professional Development since 1936 when accreditation began.
The plaque reads:
Founded in 1819 by Capt. Alden Partridge, Norwich University is
the first private institution in the US to offer formal instruction in Civil Engineering.
Norwich graduates have designed and managed construction of
notable civil engineering projects across the nation and throughout the world.
