Appreciation for Becka Warren
Becka Warren joined the Vermont Sustainable Jobs Fund 5 years ago to help the Farm to Plate team project manage and create the Vermont Agriculture and Food System Strategic Plan 2021-2030. With the release of the Strategic Plan in 2021, Becka went from one monumental task, managing the creation of a state food system plan during Covid, to another, creating a roadmap for food security in Vermont that ensures all people living here have the food they want and need to be healthy and nourished. By emphasizing community engagement, shared leadership, and a highly collaborative process for crafting strategies, it was no surprise that once the Vermont Food Security Roadmap to 2035 came out that there was a strong core of organizations ready to get to work and implement the Roadmap.
Over the course of 2024 as a member of the Farm to Plate team, Becka nurtured the formation of the Food Security Roadmap Coalition. As the focus of the Coalition’s work crystallized around deeper legislative and political advocacy, it became apparent that a new organizational home was required for staffing the Coalition to fulfill its needs and allow it to fully flourish. At the beginning of this year, Becka transitioned from being the Food Security Roadmap Coalition Manager at VSJF to the Food Security Roadmap Coalition Manager at Action Circles.
Becka has been an incredibly caring, humorous, hard-working, and wise colleague, and while we miss working with her as a part of our team, we’re excited for what she’ll bring to Action Circles and the next chapter of work to ensure food security for all Vermonters. And, in our minds she hasn’t gone too far, as we still communicate and collaborate with her on a regular basis as a member of the Coalition. Thank you Becka!

Working toward the goals of the Vermont Agriculture and Food System Strategic Plan
|
Because agricultural activity exists in every county of the state, in both rural communities and our more urban centers, we all have a stake in our ability to produce more of what we eat every day. Vermont needs a prosperous, resilient, food secure, and equitable food system that can meet more of our needs today and for future generations.

Vermont’s legislators can make policy choices that will ensure food security for everyone who lives here. The Food Security Roadmap Coalition has a 2025 policy slate with policy choices that Legislators can act on this year, to keep us on the road to food security in Vermont. Food Security Coalition members were in the Statehouse on January 8th for the first day of the session, to connect with policy champions and meet the new lawmakers as the year began. In the weeks ahead, the Coalition will continue to work with lawmakers to advance food security.
The Food Security Roadmap 2025 Policy Slate:
- Fund the Vermont Foodbank’s appropriations request for $5 million

Exploring Local Fiber as a Path to Sustainability: Highlights from the Farm to Plate Gathering
|
This session was extremely informative and inspiring in thinking about ways to diversify our agricultural products in ways that are beneficial to the environment and have the potential to bring jobs to Vermont. More of this please!

At the 2024 Vermont Farm to Plate Gathering, the “Vermont-based Food and Fiber: Increasing Diversified Farm and Market Opportunities” session explored how integrating fiber production into Vermont’s agricultural landscape can create new revenue streams, enhance sustainability, and strengthen the local economy. Led by Christine McGowan of the Vermont Sustainable Jobs Fund (VSJF), the panel brought together experts and farmers to discuss the opportunities and challenges within the growing fiber sector.
Key Insights
- The Role of Animal Fibers in Vermont Agriculture
Dave Martin of Settlement Farm and president of the Vermont Sheep and Goat Association highlighted the historical role of sheep farming in Vermont, calling for wool to be recognized as a key agricultural product. Kelly Nottermann of Snug Valley Farm emphasized how sheep support rotational grazing practices by making use of less arable land, while underscoring the need for wool production to be economically viable for farmers. Amanda Kievet of Junction Fiber Mill talked about the importance of supporting local farmers and stressed the need for more local infrastructure for wool processing.
- Plant Fibers: A New Frontier
Janet Currie of Vilhemp USA discussed hemp’s potential as a sustainable alternative to petroleum-based plastics, as well as how hemp complements existing agricultural systems. Travis Samuels of Zion Growers shared his work to build local plant fiber processing infrastructure in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom. Laura Sullivan of UVM Extension discussed how hemp and flax production complement each other, and highlighted flax’s multiple uses, including textiles, and environmental benefits.
Shared Challenges & Opportunities Across the Fiber Sector
Panelists and attendees identified several shared challenges across Vermont's fiber sector.
| | |
Challenges
- Infrastructure Gaps
- Market Development
- Consumer Education
- Policy Support

This session highlighted how integrating food and fiber production in Vermont offers a transformative model for sustainable economic development, through collaboratively addressing supply chain challenges. Vermont’s fiber sector can lead the way in creating a resilient and diversified agricultural economy.
What’s Next
Since the Gathering, VSJF has received a small grant from the Vermont Housing and Conservation Board to conduct a wool inventory in Vermont that will develop baseline information about the quantity and quality of wool being grown annually in Vermont for commercial production.
If you are interested in this project or in advancing Vermont-based natural animal or plant fiber production, please email Christine.

Food access interventions in American Indian and Alaska Native communities |
American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities in the U.S. encompass culturally rich food landscapes and traditions. Yet food access in AI/AN communities remains a public health issue. Analyzing food access using the social ecological model (SEM), it is influenced by a myriad of factors that may interact at different levels.
Food access was promoted in various intervention formats, including supporting community and/or school gardens; providing seeds; providing traditional foods at school, family, and community events; and providing meals to families.
This review highlights the importance of leveraging strengths in AI/AN communities to enhance food access, including through culturally aligned programs and traditional foods. Further collaboration between AI/AN communities and researchers may lead to the development of more informed multilevel interventions that further integrate Indigenous methodological and culturally based approaches to improving food access.
