This edition of VertueNEWS focuses on the
Pacific Northwest's premier cleantech climate solutions conference, #VIS19, coming up in Portland on September 13.
JULY 2019
Greetings from David Kenney
President & Executive Director

The Climate Crisis, Technology Innovation, & VertueLab Impact Summit

Solving the climate crisis is the greatest capital need of our time. Part of my leadership responsibility at VertueLab is understanding how major trends impact the work we do and the path forward that we are paving. As an organization focused at the intersection of solving environmental challenges and supporting technology innovation, we see two trends that are blatantly clear:

  • The climate crisis is accelerating and impacting society in clear and tragic ways.
  • Clean energy technologies are getting better and becoming cheaper, and new innovations promise to make it easier for these innovations to scale.

Our belief is that while the climate crisis can be daunting, we ALL have an unprecedented opportunity to become part of the solution. Thanks to the innovative technologies we have invested in and supported over the past 11+ years, we know first-hand that technology innovation is a critical part of the solution.

The climate crisis has become so extensive that the only way to reverse it in time is to develop and implement more technology solutions. VertueLab is paving the way for innovators, investors, and philanthropists across the Pacific Northwest to unite and become a collaborative solution to the crisis

We invite you to join us at the VertueLab Impact Summit (#VIS19) on September 13th. Our theme, COUNTDOWN, captures the urgency with which we must act. Our fireside chat panel ( see below) will talk about the critical role technology innovation will play in winning the battle against rising greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, new climate solutions technologies will be on display, and you'll meet extraordinary people.

Yes, we have a huge problem addressing the climate crisis.
And yes, we can tackle it together using technology.

I hope to see you at the VertueLab Impact Summit and to talk with you about how you can join us in our pioneering work to unleash technology innovation and entrepreneurship to solve environmental challenges.

We need everyone at the table, and the time to act is NOW.

Thank you for being part of our success,
P.S. Early-bird registration for VertueLab Impact Summit ends August 1, so be sure to sign on soon...

Cleantech Showcase Companies to discuss their innovative technologies

Some of the most fascinating startups from the Pacific Northwest will share their innovation journey with the #VIS19 audience. One of these startups, Plover, plans to revolutionize the carwash industry by innovating a system that can wash cars without using any chemicals. Plover recently hired the intern who was sponsored by VertueLab’s Interns for Cleantech Companies Program, which sponsors college students at startups where they help advance real-world clean technologies.

This year's Showcase Companies include:

  • Alaska Native Renewable Industries (Huslia, AK) - Provider of increased renewable energy and energy efficiency deployment in rural Alaskan communities for residential, commercial, and utility scale projects.

  • Inventys (Burnaby, BC, Canada) - Developer of a CO2 Marketplace using breakthrough next-generation carbon capture technology.

  • Exergy (Portland, OR) - Provider of a peer-to-peer open source protocol for sharing real time and historical energy data that has been incubated by LO3 Energy.

  • Plover (Milwaukie, OR) - Innovator of automated carwash systems that leverage advanced computer vision and robotics to clean vehicles without using any soaps or chemicals.

  • Stark Street Materials* (Portland, OR) - Producer of lightweight, nontoxic, and recyclable radiation shielding garments.

  • Sironix Renewables* (Seattle) - Innovator of environmentally friendly and safe chemicals from plants for use in industrial consumer products.

  • Rebellyous Foods (Seattle) - Manufacturer of delicious, juicy, plant-based chicken nuggets, patties, and strips that cook just like breaded chicken products - for schools, hospitals, corporate cafeterias, and restaurants.

The 2019 Cascadia CleanTech Accelerator Cohort will be at #VIS19

The eight startups in the 2019 cohort of the Cascadia CleanTech Accelerator will be talking about their technologies and how the accelerator is helping them. Among the cohort companies is Hempitecture ( pictured, above), which builds energy-efficient, nontoxic, and carbon absorbing environments using U.S.-grown hemp. The 2019 cohort includes:

  • BlueDot Photonics (Seattle) – Developer of a proprietary sunlight shaping technology that is helping solar panel manufacturers improve the efficiency of solar panels by 10-15 percent.

  • Hempitecture (Ketchum, ID) – Producer of hempcrete insulation blocks and other services for hempcrete construction, which removes carbon from the atmosphere.

  • Hexas Biomass (Olympia, WA) – Producer and distributor of sustainable, non-wood biomass that can supplement or replace wood and other biomass in multiple applications, including panel boards, bioenergy pellets, ethanol, and more.

  • Maxwell Vehicles (Seattle) – Innovator of a way to uplift cargo vans with electric powertrains, reducing energy use, lowering operating costs, and reusing electronic waste.

  • SCW Technologies (Seattle) – Developer of a patent-pending technology that uses water to convert plastic to its original petro-chemical state, providing a cost effective solution to plastic marine litter and the landfilling of end-of-life-plastics.

  • SHB Power Plan Engineering (Portland) – Innovator of the Hi-Cyclone biomass combustion system, which allows customers to create immense amounts of renewable energy with high efficiency and exceptional reliability.

  • Sustainabilist (Portland, OR) – Enabler of higher profit and lower risk in the solar and energy efficiency sectors through scientific process improvement, custom software, data science, and machine learning.
