Vestry Nominees
Dr. Frank Gilliam
I was born in Lexington, Kentucky, in 1954 and grew up there, living with my parents until beginning my undergraduate education at Vanderbilt University. I grew up in the Methodist Church, with my father’s family deeply entrenched in those traditions, as his father was a Methodist minister. Although my mother dutifully joined the Methodist church following marriage into the Gilliam family, she never forgot, and indeed was always quite grateful for, her Episcopal upbringing. I began my career in academia after receiving my Ph.D. from Duke University in 1983. My life took a decidedly random and wonderful redirection when I met a very attractive young woman named Laura Pleasants with a pick-up line on Hilton Head Beach in the summer of 1984. Time and space prevent me from detailing the events that led to our marriage in August 1986, but it was anything but a linear progression from that first summer. We moved to Huntington, West Virginia, in 1990 when I took the position of assistant professor of biology at Marshall University. Our first child, Rachel, was born in December of that year. Just over three years later, in February of 1994, our son, Ian, was born. We were quite active as a family in Enslow Park Presbyterian Church, our church home for the entirety of our 28 years in West Virginia. For reasons still unclear to me, Rachel and Ian have grown into these amazing adults, with Rachel getting her M.Div. from Duke University in 2016 and Ian
commissioning/graduating from the United States Naval Academy in that same year. She is now Program Director at Camp Beckwith, and he is now a Lieutenant in the Naval Intelligence community. In October 2017, I made possibly the wisest choice of my life to give up my tenured full professor position at Marshall to allow Laura to accept the well-deserved position of President/CEO of the United Way of Escambia County, which she has since navigated to include Santa Rosa County and is now United Way of West Florida. Following some initial ‘church shopping’ by Laura (she moved here to Pensacola four months before I did, as her new position began January 2018 and I had another semester of teaching at Marshall), we began attending St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church exclusively soon after my arrival in May 2018, becoming members in October of that year. From clergy to congregation, this has become a church family for us that simply goes beyond words to describe.

I was baptized at Christ Church but brought to St. Christopher’s at a very young age when my parents along with other families were asked by a former Bishop to found St. Christopher’s Church. I was confirmed and married at St. Christopher’s Church. My husband and I were EYC sponsors for several years before my children were born. I have been a Sunday School teacher in the past and I am trained in Godly Play. I am an EFM graduate and was trained in Steven Ministries and participated with a client when St. Christopher’s was involved in this program. I have been a driver in the past bringing Azalea Trace residents to St. Christopher’s. I have been a member of ECW and St. Agnes and a sponsor and worked with St. Christopher’s Caravan through the years. I was on the pledge committee with Anne French the year Susan came back to St. Christopher’s. I have been a chalice bearer for many years at St. Christopher’s Church. I help maintain the Harrell Scholarship that was started by my parents in memory of my brother, John Daniel Harrell, Jr. that helps recipients receive advanced college degrees. I have been a member of the Junior League of Pensacola for many years. I retired two years ago after teaching for thirty-two years predominately with learning disabled students in Escambia County. I am very aware of the problems faced by parents and students that attend O.J. Semmes School. I am a lifelong member of St. Christopher’s and would be honored to serve you as a vestry member of St. Christopher’s.
Terry Preston
After many years of being an unhappy Roman Catholic, I found my home at St. Christopher's! I fell in love the first time I crossed the threshold! I love this Christ-living community! I volunteered to act as clerk of the Vestry in 2017 and am now ready for a more active role in the Vestry. I have a BS from the US Merchant Marine Academy, and MPA from the University of West Florida, and experience ranging from an oceangoing ship's officer to a small business owner. Fiscal responsibility is very important to me. Ensuring the mission of St. Christopher's is carried throughout the community is my goal! I love spending time with my children and grandchildren!
Shane Rice
Shane Rice was born on one side of Florida, grew up in Texas, and now calls Pensacola home. He's married to Jen Young Rice and dad to Evie, Graham, and Bea. Shane works in marketing and when it's time for fun he loves reading, especially comic books and sci-fi, playing video games, and hearing or telling a good side-splitting story. He's attended St. Christopher's since 2018 and served as an alternate for our Vestry during 2021.
Gene Strickland
I grew up outside of Tampa, where my father was a police officer for 30 years. I moved to the Pensacola area in 2009 for Air Force flight training at NAS Pensacola and moved to Hurlburt in 2011. I met Angela, now my wife, while finishing training; we decided to raise a family here and have lived here since. After ten years- seven deployments flying Close Air Support over Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan, I decided that I needed to be home with my growing family. I had been deployed for half of Cole’s life already and I wanted to be more present for him. Now I am a stay-at-home father of three and intend to teach Elementary school after Ben enters school. I am strongly drawn to service; whether it was by military service, teaching, or helping with Godly Play, I’ve always felt that I should lend my time and talents to others. I hope that I can continue that service with you all here as a part of St. Christopher’s Vestry. This church family has done so much for my family; they’ve made us a part of the family since we decided to walk through those red doors, babies in-tow. St. Christopher’s has a vital role in the community- one that few other organizations are able to fill. I’ve heard countless parishioners being on the brink of giving up- tired of the politics, feeling like they don’t belong, or watching whole groups of God’s people being excluded. St. Christopher’s strives to make a place for all of God’s children- a family in Christ. I’m proud to consider myself a part of that family and I hope that I can help to keep these doors welcoming to others.
