VetATLS: Not Just for Veterinarians.
Technicians and Support Staff Have the Power!
Is the VetATLS course just for veterinarians? Absolutely not. VetATLS is built for a whole‑team approach to trauma, and technicians are central to that mission.
Trauma patients live or die based on the quality of nursing care they receive. Veterinarians diagnose, prescribe, and perform procedures, but everything in between is nursing. Trauma cases often involve long, complex hospital stays with multiple surgeries, bandage changes, IVCs, nutrition challenges, recumbency care, and constant reassessment. Technicians are the ones who carry these patients through the hardest parts of their recovery. A technician’s role is to advocate for patients. We are the ones who notice subtle changes, preempt what the patient needs, and communicate those changes to the veterinarian. Our clinical intuition trusting our gut, recognizing patterns, and acting early is one of the most powerful tools in trauma care. But intuition grows stronger with knowledge, and sometimes we don’t know what to do or how best to support the patient and the veterinary team.
That’s where VetATLS becomes transformative.
VetATLS empowers the entire team with a shared language, a structured approach, and confidence in managing trauma. Trauma presents in countless ways, and sometimes we face injuries no one on the team has seen before. VetATLS breaks trauma down into a simple, repeatable framework: primary survey, secondary survey, and clear priorities, so every team member knows how to act, what to look for, and how to advocate effectively. Technicians and support staff can transform their current role into something more, do more, see more, teach more, and be involved.
Technicians and support staff: trust your gut, build your knowledge, and step confidently into trauma care. You might be the reason a patient stabilizes. You might be the reason they get to go home.

VetATLS information
The VetATLS course is available for everyone through AVECC Learning. Starting in the Fall of 2026, there will be an in-person skills lab where you can practice the skills that are learned through the online course.
Additionally, if you love teaching and instructing others, you can now take the “Instructor Training for the Veterinary Advanced Trauma Life Support (VetATLS) Course”, which is debuting at IVECCS 2026. While this particular lab is now filled, there will be other opportunities to take this course in the future, and the Trauma Support Team Committee highly encourages technicians and assistants to join the fun and become a certified instructor.
