Urgent Trip to VA Clinic
A 77-year-old 100% disabled Vietnam Air Force Veteran in Johnstown needed a ride to the Northern Colorado VA Outpatient Clinic to change bandages from a diabetic toe amputation. The wound exam and new bandage were two weeks overdue because he didn’t have transportation to the clinic.Upon receiving the plea for help from a nurse at the clinic, we scheduled transportation as well as rides for future checkups. The Veteran lives alone and has many other health issues due to Agent Orange. He was very grateful for the ride and for the fact that someone “cares enough” to help him.
Ongoing Wellness Visits
A 76-year-old Army Veteran in Albuquerque was moved to assisted living because he can no longer live on his own. His only family is a niece who lives on the East Coast and visits him every couple of months. She was concerned about his health and welfare between trips. The Veteran felt out of place in his new surroundings and needs a listener/visitor to stop by weekly to make sure he’s okay. One of our volunteers has been visiting the Veteran weekly since March for listening sessions, helping him operate his cell phone, running errands, and reporting back to the niece on his progress. The niece has expressed her gratitude many times for the help and compassion given to the Veteran. It has lessened his anxiety and reduced his depression.
Dental Work & Financial Assistance
An 84-year-old Korean War Purple Heart Veteran in Kansas City is in need of dental work not provided by the VA. We have put him in touch with a local dental network for treatment. He is also in need of furnace repairs. We have coordinated his request with Purple Heart Homes and learned he qualifies for assistance.
