This Is Why We Do What We Do

Furnace Repair Rescue

An Army Veteran in Cheyenne has been living comfortably in his RV for 20 years. After two decades of use, the furnace went out. Because of the furnace's age, the Veteran was unsuccessful in finding an RV repair shop that would consider looking into the problem. He contacted a Cheyenne VA Patient Advocate for resources who, in turn, reached out to Qualified Listeners for assistance. After much searching, we located a mobile RV repair shop in Laramie that would drive to Cheyenne to assess the situation. It was determined the furnace control panel failed and could be replaced with a new part. Qualified Listeners paid the mobile shop a retainer fee for mileage and labor, plus the cost of a new control panel for the furnace.

The mobile RV shop removed the furnace to take back to his shop in Laramie to repair when the part would arrive. After weeks of excuses of the part being on backorder, scheduling several weeks to work on it, and other delays, a date was finally set to return the repaired furnace to the Veteran's RV in Cheyenne. The appointment date came and went – no furnace, no repair, no show, no call. After several unsuccessful attempts to contact the mobile RV shop owner, we notified local authorities.

Meanwhile, with cold weather setting in, there was an extreme sense of urgency to resolve this problem. We were fortunate to locate a reputable RV dealer who would work with us in this unusual situation. We were able to get a new furnace installed. This ordeal caused an unexpected added expense to Qualified Listeners but was well worth it to keep the Veteran warm and safe during the winter. The Veteran called us immediately after the new furnace was installed and tested to express an emotional thanks of gratitude.

National Day of Giving November 28

National Day of Giving is a “global generosity movement." It was started in 2012 on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. It's also known as Giving Tuesday. Nonprofits in the U.S. raised $3.1 billion in 2022. Donations on Giving Tuesday in 2023 will likely range from between $3.5 Billion to $5.1 Billion. Through October 2023, Qualified Listeners paid out $10,700 in direct veteran support; our volunteers have worked 2,125 hours and have driven 17,453 miles to assist hundreds of Veterans and families with transportation, listening sessions, mobility devices, home safety upgrades for physical challenges, financial assistance, donated furniture and household items, and more. All our services are free to the Veteran Community, but it takes money to provide free services. Help celebrate National Day of Giving by donating to Qualified Listeners. We change lives. We impact lives. We save lives. Help us continue to grow strong to serve more Veterans and their families. Our Veterans will tell you that your support is appreciated more than you know.
