It’s been feeling like summer but flavors of fall are all around. This weekend, greens continue to flourish at Cabbage Throw Farm. Baby greens include arugula, spinach, spring mix, baby kale, cress and farmer mix. You’ll also find beets, carrots, turnips, radishes, cooking greens, herbs, garlic, escarole, lettuce, Bok choy, Napa Cabbage, Tatsoi, and more! It's time to make a veggie roast or autumn salad.

Recipe of the week:
Fall Harvest Salad - mix your favorite baby greens with roasted sweet potatoes, crisp apples or turnips, candied pecans, goat cheese and toss with a maple mustard vinaigrette. Yummy!
Salvaterra's Gardens
Root Veggie Recipes
I'm always sad to see the summer vegetables like tomatoes and cucumbers come to an end. The easy salad and tomato sandwich dinners are over until next year. But then I remember how much we enjoy hardy root vegetable salads! The green cabbage is very tender and makes a great base for a root vegetable salad. And shredded red cabbage adds a beautiful pop of color. These salads are a great way to empty out the vegetable draw and use up any vegetables that are hanging around, especially if they're not in the best of shape anymore. Broccoli, fennel, scallions, radishes, turnips, beets and carrots can be chopped, roasted and served room temp over a bed of greens or shredded cabbage. Or if you're in the mood for crunch, shred or spiralize all the root vegetables and enjoy them raw! Toss in some beans, rice, quinoa etc and it's a meal in a bowl. Customize the flavor with your dressing- ranch, sesame ginger garlic dressings, Japanese carrot dressing, garlic lemon tahini dressing, creamy honey dijon vinaigrette... these are always in rotation at our house!

Here are some of Jess' favorite root veggie recipes:

This week week line-up includes: spring mix, arugula, spinach, kale (red, green, tuscan), collards, swiss chard, pak choy, cabbage (green, red, napa), broccoli, fennel, parsley, cilantro, spaghetti squash, yellow onions, scallions, bell peppers, red radishes, hakurei turnips, red beets, carrots, and apples.
Scholl Orchards
Apples, Pears and More
Everyone’s new favorite apples are waiting for you. Yep, Evercrisp, Ludacrisp and Rosalee!
Ton of other varieties too. Plus plenty of cold cider, and sweet, delicious pears for fall salads and cheese plates.

Veggie offerings this week: Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, winter squashes, creamy red potatoes and onions.

Beef Stroganoff Pie!
From long ago and far away comes Pie+Tart's latest Dinner Pie: rich and creamy with lots of tender beef and's Beef Stroganoff PIE!! From its origins in 19th century Czarist Russia to a little pie shop at the end of 2020, this is perhaps the quintessential comfort food. Pie+Tart will also bring to market Roast Vegetable and Goats Cheese Quiche, Sausage, Cheddar, and Caramelized Onion Quiche, and lots of Chicken Pot Pies.

For dessert, choose perhaps either Lemon Ricotta or Chocolate Fudge Tarts, or another dish with a long history, Apple Pandowdy. It's slightly juicier than a traditional Apple Pie, with broken up bits of puffy pastry on top that get mixed in just a bit, making it look a bit messy, or dowdy?. It may not be elegant, but it sure is delicious. See you down by the river on Saturday!

Is your property watershed-friendly?

Nurture Nature Center has a great new program in partnership with Penn State Extension, which helps property owners to certify their yards/lawns as Watershed-Friendly. This is a statewide program to encourage people to reduce use of pesticides and increase use of methods to manage stormwater and support habitat on their properties.
The goal of this project is to expand the number of watershed-friendly properties throughout Pennsylvania while educating residents, communities, educational institutions, and businesses about the value of a healthy watershed and best practices for improving water quality.

Read more about the program and complete an online application to see if you qualify to receive a watershed-friendly property sign here:

Funding for this program is provided by the Department of Environmental Protection’s 2020 Environmental Education Grants Program.
