City of Redwood City
Veterans Memorial Building / Senior Center-YMCA
Project Update

Dear Redwood City Community Members,
Thank you to those of you who attended the last Veterans Memorial Building/Senior Center-YMCA Project traffic workshop on April 26. Your participation and feedback are important to us.

This Monday, May 21, a schematic design presentation will be given to the City Council at their regular City Council meeting. This meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers of City Hall. The community is welcome to attend to see this presentation. If you cannot attend the meeting, it will be live streamed here. A recording will also be available after the meeting.

If Council chooses to approve the Project Schematic Design, and continue with the  CEQA process, Design Development and Construction Documents, the estimated  Project timeline envisions a possible start of construction (Phase I) for the Veterans  Memorial Building/Senior Center in March  2019. Construction could take up to 24  months with a possible grand opening in April 2021. YMCA representatives have stated  they would like to begin construction in Phase II and  behind  the Veterans Memorial  Building/Senior Center with a possible start of construction in early 2020 and  to be  complete in early 2022. Staff also heard from neighbors that they would like the City to include traffic calming improvements in the neighborhood as an important and critical part of Phase I.

A number of tasks will have to be completed in order to start construction, including:
* Development Agreement between the City and the YMCA
* Ground Lease Agreement between the City and the YMCA
* Finalize project construction funding
* Presentations  to  the  Historical  Resources  Advisory Committee,  Architectural
Review Committee, and to the Planning Commission
* Traffic calming design and engineering
* CEQA Process and EIR Certification
* Completion of the Design Development and Construction Documents

More information about this Council item can be found in the staff report here.
