Aligning "Heart & Head" for Real Impact …
It is heart-warming to think about all that has been accomplished this year on behalf of our Veteran clients and our communities. The end-of-year impact numbers listed below speak for themselves. However, it is also humbling to recognize that the challenges will continue into the new year as we help Veterans build meaningful lives, find good jobs, secure the benefits they have earned, and the community services they need when they face crisis.
Clearly no one does this work; serve on our Board, volunteer at events, and provide funding, without a heart for Veterans, transitioning military, members of the Guard and Reserves and their families. However, beyond heart, it also takes a head for business. Success demands a strong capable staff, financial stewardship, ever-improving processes, and a consistent message. It takes both a generous heart and a head for business to have lasting impact.
"As we conclude 2022 and approach our 17th year of operation, we are so thankful to all who continue to enable this mission of service. Without you, none of this would be possible!
I wish each of you and yours peace, joy, and impact in the year ahead."
- Paulette M. Risher, CEO/President SSV, Major General, U.S. Army, Retired

Community Delivers Christmas Cheer to Veterans
This Holiday Season, SSV was able to connect several organizations with over 50 Veterans and their family members who needed a little help and hope this year. Some gifts came in the form of donations, but sometimes a group took it upon themselves to sponsor a specific Veteran and their family by selecting presents and holding in their hearts the unique needs of the family. It’s an incredible act of generosity and kindness by the following groups and those who remain anonymous.

"This is truly a Christmas Miracle" said one Veteran mother who, despite working two jobs still found herself unable to afford basic items like beds and car seats for her boys. "The thought of having gifts to open on Christmas was not an option ...until now. Thank you!"

The U.S. Department of Labor has recognized Still Serving Veterans as a 2022 HIRE Vets Medallion Award recipient. The HIRE Vets Medallion Program is the only federal Veterans’ employment program that recognizes businesses who demonstrate exceptional achievement in Veteran hiring, retention, and professional development.
Still Serving Veterans is honored to be based in one of the top U.S. regions for HIRE Vets recognized businesses. Every day we see the value Veterans bring to our nonprofit as we work alongside a team of over 80% Veterans. PHOTOS: SSV staff while in the service.

Distinguished Service Recognized
Congratulations to Paulette Risher, Major General, US Army (retired). SSV's President and inspirational Veteran advocate was recently awarded the Alabama Distinguished Service Medal, the State's highest civilian award.
The award, signed by Governor Kay Ivey and Major General Sheryl Gordon, the Alabama Adjutant General, was presented by Admiral (retired) Kent Davis, the Alabama Commissioner of Veterans Affairs, at the recent Veteran Well-Being Town Hall at the Riverchase Galleria in Birmingham.
Paulette co-chairs, along with Admiral Davis, the Alabama Challenge to Prevent Veteran Suicide. She has selflessly served on the Alabama Veterans Executive Network (AlaVetNet), the Alabama Workforce Development Board, and the Alabama Small Business Advisory Board, all while leading the nonprofit Still Serving Veterans (SSV.org) as President and CEO.

Redstone Federal Credit Union is touching the hearts of hundreds of Veterans and students this Christmas. They have partnered with schools in our community to learn about, and to share a personal note with a Veteran. Each card also represents a donation supporting NAVRNet, a partnership of North Alabama resources helping Veterans in need, coordinated by Still Serving Veterans. Thank you.
