The next BioTherapy Live! broadcast will air Tuesday, March 21 at 9:00 am PST (12:00 pm New York time). The program, will feature Dr. Sílvia González Monteiro, who will discuss larval biotherapy in animals, and Dr. Janaína Brand Dillmann, who will share her experience treating injured horses, and her research with resistant bacteria.
Professor Silvia Gonzalez Monteiro graduated with a degree in Veterinary Medicine at the Pontifical Catholic University (PUCRS) of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil in 1992. She received her Master's degree and PhD in Veterinary Parasitology from the Federal Rural University (UFRRJ), Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Dr. Monteiro has been a Professor of Veterinary Parasitology at the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM), Brazil since 2002. She is currently a professor of the postgraduate program in Veterinary Medicine at UFSM, where she supervises and teaches masters and doctoral courses.
Dr. Monteiro is also a coordinator and founder the LAPAVET, a Veterinary Parasitology Laboratory located at UFSM, where she guides undergraduate and graduate students in carrying out tests
and parasitological evaluations.
Dr. Monteiro has already published two editions of the book “Parasitologia na Medicina Veterinária” by GEN. She has been actively involved with veterinary biotherapy since 2017 and has created a laboratory that specifically breeds and supplies Calliphorid (blowfly) larvae.
Dr. Janaína Brand Dillmann graduated in Veterinary Medicine at the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM), Brazil in 1992. She worked with horses during her undergraduate studies. She has a Master's degree (2016-2018) and a PhD (2018-2020) in Animal Health and
Reproduction at UFSM. She began her biotherapy studies in 2018, using blow flies clinically to treat horse injuries. Subsequently, she extended her studies into the laboratory, where she tested the safety and efficacy of using a lesser studied blow fly, Lucilia cuprina.
